Prob sounds a stupid question this but..

On a V5 it states quite clearly "This document is not proof of ownership"

So what does prove ownership?

Receipt - V5 is just for the registered keeper.

Who's asking?

Paperwork is neither necessary nor sufficient.

I could buy a vehicle, get an offishul lergitmit receipt and then give it away as a gift to some teenage tart Mrs Borg. Or said tart/missus could claim that I did. It's then a case of he-says-she-says.

Nothing proves it absolutely.

Receipt, bill of sale, letter from previous owner.

But really still a matter for courts if any disagreement as would any disagreement.

Not saying it would need to go to court but not impossible as 'proof of ownership' can be a vague term.

Having watch "Can't pay we'll take it away" should you be in such a position you might be shafted should they come knocking.

Conflicting info here but if you are worried....

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/action-your-creditor-can-take/bailiffs/your-belongings-and-bailiffs/what-goods-can-a-bailiff-take/proving-who-owns-the-items-bailiffs/

You could also phone the CAB/DVLA.

More than that, you can be the registered keeper of a hire-purchase vehicle etc, but not be the legal owner.

If you are facing an actual dispute over ownership, there are probably quite a few things that you could come up with to support your claim, besides a V5 - unless of course, it is a finance company or your ex-wife's solicitor making the claim (in which case, you are probably screwed).

There would be some sort of paper-trail from when you first taxed it, applied for insurance, had it serviced or MOT'd, etc. plus statements from friends and relatives, neighbours or employers, to the effect that the bike was in your possession from a certain date.

If you can't trace the previous owner, maybe their neighbours could testify as to when they last saw it in their possession.

If you bought it as a result of seeing an on-line or a printed advert, you could probably trace that as well.

If the claim is likely to escalate, best see a solicitor for proper advice.

If the vehicle in question was a gift, I'm guessing the original owner is well known. Just write out a receipt for the price of one pond, get him to sign and that's it. Unless it's him you're worried about the dispute of ownership with.

V5 isn't in your name? Police say there's nothing they can do.

Other items have been taken? Police say they can just claim it was a gift.
