Just a quick question about something which I've been questioning and can't find the answer to, why in some engine designs are the cam sprockets located on the left or right hand side of the camshafts as opposed to the center?

I'm not sure whether this observation is correct but, when I've worked on motorbike engines in the past I've noticed older bike engine designs have the cam sprockets centered, newer engine designs have placed them on the right or left hand side, are there any benefits to them not being in the center?

Thanks

Mechanically, in the centre is better.

But now imagine you need to change a camchain...
