Someone I know mounts their number plate way back under the seat, so that you can only see it when crouching down (and obviously camera's can't see it). He recently got stopped, police took some photos, and then he ended up with a £60 fine and no points.

Considering speeding tickets currently carry £100 fine & 3 points (at least), is this the way to go? What's the 'proper' or maximum punishment for not properly displaying a number plate?

Maximum punishment?

Being gang raped in the showers after being sent to prison for perverting the course of justice.

But only people who think they're really fucking cool are allowed to put their plates by the rear shock or other such places.

That's what I thought, that it would be like flip up plates or that spray stuff, but it doesn't appear so (unless he got off easy).

Is it really worth the hassle from the police?

I got away with this for about 6 months about 8 years ago now.

It was basically just a big sticker, legal numberplate size.
You could see it clearly if you were stood behind the bike.

Inevitably i got fined for it while riding through matlock one night.

Ever since that I never bothered pushing what i could get away with too much and have been fine ever since.

Just not worth the hassle really.

A dodgy overtake or a wee bit sharp off the mark and silly plate may be enough bait to catch a tug.
It normally works on how much you piss off the PoPo.

If they go to 'their' hassle to stop you, run your plate (if they can disambiguate it Smile ) & etc. you may get a NIP for something for 'their' troubles.
If you look 'clean' it's to one's advantage. Why draw attention to the fact that you're a nob-end? Smile

Well between red light camera's now checking speed, camera's in 20mph zones, and camera's being repositioned (I guess to catch more people) it might be worth the occasional pull.

I'm hoping to reposition the plate so camera's can't see it but it doesn't look as obvious as bEN's example Smile

Wonder what the legality is of side-mounted plates on bikes is?

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7374/8716390941_3906be2209.jpg

Could hang the plate like this on my bike if I wanted, the mounting point is already there and it wouldn't stick out any more than my cylinders. Reckon that a camera wouldn't be able to see it from the left hand side as the bike would be in the way.

Protip: there's a bunch of useful links in my profile. For example:

Just buy one on ebay...snap in half and put under the seat. Ride with no plate. When you get pulled over, your bike was on its side when you came back to it and you've got the plate under your seat as it wouldn't stay mounted Wink

Of course, the biggest issue with mounting your number plate on the side, is that it looks shit

Hmmm, there doesn't seem to be a vertical element to that diamond. Do yo think that they actually meant to keep it 2 dimentional?

I had my plate mounted like this on the pit bike.
Got away with it for about 6 months, and then got a tug by a Firearms cop. He has pretty chilled out to be honest, and gave me a rectification notice.

(Index isnt my actual plate, i swapped it out for the show plate for track days)

They may not have meant to, but that's what they did:

The Man wrote:
“relevant area”, in relation to a registration plate, means the area contained in a square described on the ground

(a) in front of the vehicle in the case of a plate fixed on the front of the vehicle, and
(b) behind the vehicle in the case of a plate fixed on the rear of the vehicle,

where one corner of the square is immediately below the middle of the plate and the diagonal of the square from that corner is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle;

It is an interesting point. There is indeed no viewer height mentioned. The rear light cluster on Enfields, for example, sticks out over the plate by quite some margin, and the plate can be tucked right under it, partially obscuring it from high angles.

It's not something that I'd want to make a point of arguing the toss on, especially if I was being done for an(other) offence. Might sound a bit pervertish.

That is what I thought.

If, however, the filth tried to nick me for having a number plate (like the protagonist) that is visable within the 2d diamond but recessed enough under the rear wheel arch to not be visable by a speed camera, I'd be tempted to ask the CPS representative in court exactly how it breaches the law.
