Hey, I'm looking at getting a YBR125 in the coming days, there's a few I've spotted that have caught my eye, one of them has 24k miles and is a 2011 model, How many miles is too much when it comes to buying used?. I honestly have no idea if the 24k miles should put me off or not

It's fine if it's been serviced and if it runs well. But it's not worth as much as one that's done fewer miles, especially when you come to sell it on.

Might have just been my imagination, but I kind of got the impression that 30k was a lot of miles for 125's (generally). Sure they can go for longer, but obviously you see less and less bikes when you go over that figure.

What I would look out for is lots of previous owners, think mine had 10 (something I forgot to check when buying it Embarassed) and you could really tell, everyone had seemingly bodged something Confused iirc that had about 27k.

Assuming an average 5 day week, 48 week year, that's a 25 mile a day commute, which obviously doesn't take into account any running around, when owner 'X' wasn't at work.

It doesn't take much to do 6000 miles a year, I've done over 3000 since May and my commute is less than 5 miles a day.

As said, if it's been well serviced, doesn't sound like a bucket of spanners and look uglier, it shouldn't be a problem.

@upcomingchris - my cheap noodle box 125 got used all year round and did 40,000 mile. 24k on a YBR should be fine.

@MC - In my opinion a large part of the reason 125s become rarer over 25k mile is because learners crash them more than mechanical difficulties.

Wouldn't put me off but you don't know if that's 24k miles of being loved and cared for with regular oil changes and plenty of nurturing maintenance. Or 24k of having the tits ragged off it with only a bucket of water over it when it's unrecognisably filthy.

The problem with 125s is they typical have above average number of owner and said owners have below average mechanic skills and below average fundage to get proper servicing done.
There will always be exceptions and a well maintained one could easily go on to more than twice that mileage.

Mine is a 2010 and currently has 15,500 miles and runs really well. Got it a year ago with just over 12,000 miles on and had it thoroughly checked by a mechanic friend as it had 3 previous owners so I wanted to check it had been looked after as well as seller had said. Friend confirmed that everything looked good. I new it needed new rear tyre soon. Changed out oil straight away anyway.

Even as a learner I've managed to put 3,500 miles on it in the last 10 months. Still running great and had a big service a month ago, including full check over again, new chain, tyres, brake pads etc.

So, they can have quite a few miles on and be ok, as long as they've been looked after as already mentioned.

Another good thing to do if you know the reg is run a check on previous MOT advisories and see if there's receipts for any work needed soon after those advisories.

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

Gives you an idea if people took care of it or weren't worried about running it cheap as possible and passing it on to next owner with problems. Not total proof of anything but gives you and idea of it's been cared for, along with seeing as much paperwork for services and work etc when you're buying.

I passed my test on a CG with 95k on the clocks, which according to the school had only ever had adjustments, oil, filters and tyres.
