Has anyone fitted a USB piower plug to their bike? If so, where did you source it from and have you had any hassle keeping it waterproof? I want to be able to charge the phone and use it for maps, so I want the power plug out of the way behind the fairings or under the petrol tank

Straight to the battery. Hidden under the seat.

My take on this, does the job nicely and I also use it for tyre inflation. Optional fuse for one or the other. (well, not THE other - if you know what I mean lol)

USB cig lighter plug, a few quid from Maplin. The socket, fuses and wiring & connectors all from my bits in the workshop, but they are all available cheap.

True Gangsta electrics.

I'm sure there was something (on here maybe) saying that the USB ones draw current continually. If that's the case, and for the sake of a few quid, it would be better wired in with a relay.

I asked the same question (being an anal-ist) but was assured by many that the USB won't draw too much.

But also, being a bit Belt 'n' Braces, I would get better sleep Smile if there was a simple relay installed to drive the USB adaptor too.

Relay is good. means when the ignition is off, your accessory is off too.

If you want to charge your phone with the engine off though (like when you arrive at a campsite), you'll need to hook it direct to the battery.

Here's my phone charging setup on the Royal Enfield Bullet. Lighter socket direct to battery through an inline fuse.

Charger and phone aren't waterproof. Socket doesn't need to be.

However. If you just want USB. I'd suggest one of these:

The USB socket itself isn't waterproof. You can buy waterproof ones though.

Up to you if you want a relay or not. I'd suggest you DO want a fuse regardless.

Safe, bruv. Actually, mine is a cigarette lighter wired in that way. If I need USB then I'll put a cig lighter > USB adapter in.

Thanks for the compliment! I think what looks like sellotape may be the plastic bag containing the toolkit!

I did it a few years ago.

I used:
1x old USB cable extender
1x waterproof connectors
1x relay
1x 12v to 5v converter

I cut the USB cable in half, and attached one side of the waterproof connector:
https://i.imgur.com/hs5SXeC.jpg

And I soldered and wrapped the other connector to the output of the converter. Then I could plugin/unplug the USB cable at will:
https://i.imgur.com/AimwfQm.jpg

I mounted the converter under a fairing panel, which had plenty of space:
https://i.imgur.com/XYGJBYl.jpg

And finally I exposed the USB port through the dash. Due to the design of the dash I had no issues keeping this dry:
https://i.imgur.com/j5pVVdt.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/oV7iRed.jpg

It worked perfectly for my entire road-trip.

I don't know why exactly, but it may have been the USB cable's fault, but my phone charged very slowly from this. It must have been charging at like 500mA rather than 1A+.
