I had the same issue in 1998.

Back then, I had to visit a DVLA 'local office' to effect the change of taxation class.

I imagine, with the massive advances in technology, that you either have to do the same (maybe by post).

I had to do this when I bought a car in 2010.

The only quick way to do it at the time was to go to a local DVLA office. They can process the change of keeper and change of tax classification at the same time, and you can also tax the car.

The car's 'Disabled' status should have been cancelled when the previous owner notified DVLA that they were no longer the keeper, but you still need to go to a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax, as the DVLA Locals are shut down now.

Form V70 is the one to use, and you will be changing the Tax Class to PLG.

I've got the old v5 here that hasn't been sent away yet, I went to local post office and the lady wasn't sure, so it's a v70 I need to complete and will I still send off the v5 as well? Thanks guys

You do not want to get involved with the DVLA they will mess things up and cause you both pain and cash. If I were in your situation I would just chop a leg off and get a blue badge.

You need to complete Form V70, and hand it over together with your completed V5 at the post office (one that does car tax, as not all do now).

You can pay for your tax or declare SORN at the same time, but if you decide not to, you can't do anything (over the counter, or on-line) until you get your V5 back. - and it could take 6-8 weeks at this time of year.

Well, when I changed a car tax class from disabled to plg I went in the office, told them what I wanted, they stamped some stuff and it was done.

More recently, I changed a bike tax class from bicycle to historic. I went in the office, told them what I wanted, they stamped some stuff and it was done.

Even more recently, I changed a car tax class from plg to historic. I went in the office, told them what I wanted - this time they made a phone call because the car had the wrong model put on the reg in 1972, then they stamped some stuff and it was done.

Even more recently, I got a bike with a very old V5. I sent it to DVLA and they sent me a new one and the tax class was set to 'historic' for me.

So yeah, I get what people say - no end of fuck ups Rolling Eyes

No, no, no - you're doing this all wrong.

You need to detail an ongoing tale-of-woe saga, preferably lasting several years, in which the DVLA cost you your house/job/marriage/sanity and bum your children to boot.

Your current "Government agency does something right" narrative just doesn't cut the mustard around here.

Get a grip man - and tell us how they fucked it all up. Wink Mr. Green

If you have all of the V5 (not just the new keeper bit) you still need to complete a V70 and hand it over at the Post Office with the correct fee for your 6 or 12 months tax.

If you try to do anything online or through the post, you still can't change the tax class from 'Disabled' to 'PLG' until you get the V5 back - and you will still need to fill in a V70 and go back to the Post Office to do that, because your new V5 will be in your name but still classed as 'Disabled'.

Form V62 is to apply for a new V5 if you don't have one from the previous owner, but there is no option on the V62 to change the Tax Class, which is what your original post is about.

TAX Class needs to be changed from 'Disabled' to PLG for 'Private / Light Goods', and you need Form V70 to do that.

The form is confusing, because it says on the back, not to take it to a Post Office, but since all 39 of the DVLA 'Local' offices closed in December 2013, some Post Offices have taken over some of the old Face-to-Face functions, but the form hasn't been altered.

I have done this twice since the local DVLA office closed, and it's the only method I know, where you can change the Tax Class and tax the car on the same day.

You can of course, send off your V5, V70 and cheque for payment through the post, but several weeks later (if at all) you will get your amended V5 back, together with your cheque, because for some strange reason, DVLA won't take your payment at the same time - so in the meantime, your car won't be taxed.

Fuel type will be 'Petrol' or 'Diesel' or whatever it was before - unless you have done some major engineering work to change it.

What I was told was that I send off the v62 even if the previous v5 has been sent and there was a question of what tax class is the vehicle and to write down petrol/diesel etc and I would get a new v5 with correct tax class on it and could tax the same day, phoned them twice to double check and both said the same thing. Will wait and see what I get back and let you know. Cheers

I see you've sorted this now but it happened to me a few months back. I bought a car and tried to tax it over the phone to drive it home but they said they couldn't change the tax class. Fuckem I thought; I tried. So I drove home and the following day I went to the post office and the guy seemed to do it for me on the computer (I couldn't do it online when I tried). I don't recall him even filling out any form, he simply said what class do I want it changed to, and I said the normal one for a car (private, light goods iirc). I paid up for six months and boom it was done. Only took 30 seconds if that, and I got a confirmation letter in the post a few weeks later.
