Just baught a second hand set of dainese leathers, the leather is in great condition and they fit me perfect but the inside of the 2 piece suit which is mesh and padding is a bit smelly! I've turned them inside out and used fabreze on them but it hasn't made much of a dirrerance! Still smells like cats piss and sweaty feet Sad anyone got any tips to get rid of the smell please? Like I say the leather itself is in great condition and they fit me so well It would be a shame to have to get rid of them.

If they were mine and didnt cost me too much, I'd wash them, let them dry naturally (not near heat) and then nourish (leather balsam) the leather once dry.

Cheers for that fellas, I'm a bit scared to put them in the washing machine like! Think I'll try the freezer and use the washing machine as a last resort Thumbs Up

Wouldn't use the washing machine but would consider using a bacterial wash and let them soak in a bath of warm water, then clean the smelly areas using a sponge and 99.9% kitchen surface stuff....but not bleach.
Use towels to mop up excess and stuff with newspapers, change them every few hours and allow to dry naturally.

It'll be a pain to do as unless you slowly dry them and give them an occasional stretch they may end up slightly shrinking.
Then I'd use some leather treatment. Look for stuff that contains lanolin. It's basically sheep grease but is excellent for keeping leather supple and adds a little bit of waterproofing.

Bought some leather trousers that arrived a bit mildewy. Got a replacement pair and told to keep said mildew pair. Washed in machine on a hand wash setting and all good. Thumbs Up

Well, thought it best to qualify further the 'throw them in the machine' statement. A gentle hand-washy / delicates is a bit safer than a 3 hour 90 degree boil.

So the, er, wife says. I didnt even know we had a washing machine. Liar

The leather is treated with lubricants during the curing, tanning dying process.
If you use the wrong stuff to clean the leather you may wash out the lubricant.
Without it the leather will crack.

Since they get wet from time to time from rain and seem to remain sound after drying it may be OK to soak them in some mild disinfectant. Very dilute Bleach would work or Detol as suggested.
Dry them and then condition the leather with a Nikwax product

https://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=62&itemid=-1&fabricid=-1

And remember, every time you wear those leathers it will be like spooning the other guy. Razz

Many thanks for that info chaps, I think I'll try soaking them in a cool bath and sponge them with dettol 99.9 cleaner then condition the leather once they've dried. Hope it sorts the problem. They're second hand but I probably payed a bit too much for them. They looked mint condition but they must have been worn a fair bit to smell like they do Confused

The best thing will be get air and sun round them, hanging up outside in the rain wouldn't hurt, then several days more or less outside but undercover if possible. Sun will be kind of difficult this time of year!
Inside out is a good idea.
You could wash them but results are unpredictable, and doing a very gentle hand wash might not get rid of the smell either.
Not sure febreeze is all that good an idea it only hides the smell IMO, and I'm not sure I'd want a chemical soup mixing with my own sweat later Crying or Very sad
If you use some kind of disinfectant they'll smell of that almost as bad - and bleach could be quite damaging.
You could sort of sponge them with a wet cloth + detergent perhaps (inside). It's worth persevering because they'll probably smell from you wearing them soon enough in the warmer weather anyway.

Doesn't cut lemons and or uncooked rice absorb smells/bacteria, worth a try before you risk fucking them up in a washing machine, don't know about you but im fucked if i know how a washing machine works.

If eating loads of cod liver oil until you shit yourself doesn't mask the smell of cat piss, you could try some Detol Antibacterial Laundry Cleanser when you put them through the washing machine, I use it all the time on my sports gear. Never used on leathers though, sounds like a bad idea to me, let me know how it goes.

Is the lining definitely not removable?

If it is then remove and wash the lining.

If not, then freezer, but expect the smell to return eventually.

I put mine in the washing machine on a delicates setting. Used some detergent that was meant for silk and some antibacterial liquid made for putting in washing machines (not sure but, it might have been made by dettol).

Gave then a good rubbing down, when still slightly damp, with leather conditioner. Smell has gone and leathers are fine.

I did the same with my boots too.

My Mrs spilled milk in our new car a week after getting in. Fecking stank after another week even though I washed it straight away with soapy water.

Someone at work mentioned using neat Fairy Liquid (other alternatives are available Rolling Eyes) and giving it a good scrub. Leave to dry, scrub off with a damp cloth, then used Oust for lovely smells. Worked a treat! As an added precaution I'd get magic trees for your pits

So I've got up this morning and as soon as I went into the kitchen where my leathers were hanging I could smell them! I've bitten the bullet and went to asda, got some antibacterial washing liquid designed for silk , wool and cashmere. I've wrapped the jacket in a pillow case and machine washed it on a 20 degree delicate wash inside out, same with the trousers. They've both came out smelling lovely and look great. So they're drying now and I've ordered some motul perfect leather to treat them once dry. Fingers crossed. I'll let you know the outcome in a few days.

Sad well washing them was a waste of time! Thought they were going to be fine but the smell returned as they were drying. I don't think the delicate 20 degree wash was anywhere near enough. So they're now at the dry cleaners who have said they can sort them out no bother at all, they're going to dry clean them, deodorise them and treat the leather. £105 quid tho! Anyways lesson learned and would never buy a second hand set of leathers again. After paying the dry cleaning bill they'll stand me £285 which to be fair ain't too bad as the cheapest used set of the same leathers I can find are still £350.
