Bike tyre

Hello, I have a CBR 600 with an nearly new rear tyre, coming home from work tonight I hit a brick in the road. The rear tyre on my '89 CBR has a nick in the side wall. It's about the size of a thumb nail. Can I glue the tyre? it's an Avon Azaro 140 80 17. Bought new 2 months ago, less than 500 miles in and I'm hoping it's not scrap.

Strictly speaking, with a damaged sidewall it's fooked and should be replaced.
Glue will only have a cosmetic effect.

If you decide to risk it and get your moneys worth out of it you wouldn't be the first to do so, but it's up to you.
Don't confuse glueing a flap down with a repair though.

It may be fine until the tread wears down, who knows?

Yeah, that's fucked.

But seeing the crazing going on with the rubber on the sidewall, 'nearly new' is a term I would call into question.

The cracks in the sidewall suggest the tyre is less than nearly new. Unless it's a second hand tyre someone said was new.

It's scrap anyway and a definite 3 points if the police see it or stop you for anything else.

A tyre will cost about £100 or take the possible points and insurance hassle (through totting up). Two or three increased premiums will cost the same as a new tyre.

OP, that is beyond repair. You can even see the foreign object cut through the sidewall's kevlar fibers. Also, the tyre in your picture looks very old, I mean all the cracks in the rubber. Thumbs Down

Here's what I've managed, after running over a brick at 80kph, I was just overtaking a lorry, so when I saw it I had no time to react, I managed to avoid direct impact but couldn't completely avoid it. I consider this to be still alright to ride.

Thanks for all your help. A local bike shop has a part worn 'Pirelli Match tyre'? he can fit for £50 if I ride the bike to him. Does that seem a good deal? he says it's the same sort of tyre as a BT45.

Is £50 expensive for a fitted tyre albeit a part worn? he says there are no cracks on the side wall and there is 4mm tread. This tyre he wants to sell me has had a puncture repair on it. He will fit it to the rim for £35 but I wouldn't know how to get the wheel off.

"Like a BT45" doesn't sound much better than an Avon! However, that's not a bad price for a big-name part worn tyre fitted 'ride in'.

Ok, it might be a go-er then. I can get a part worn delivered off the internet for £27 but then it's fitting it. Also as stated the bike tyre from the shop has had a repair on it.

I had side wall damage on the front tyre of the Bandit. Took the wheel down to the local bike place (I know you can't get the wheel off) and got a part worn fitted & balanced for £15.

As others have said, you can clearly see damage to the carcass of the tyre. Would you fancy that blowing out on you at speed?

Yep, that tyre has had it. Looking on the bright side it looked a bit knackered and perished anyway, so the brick may have done you a favour!

I too am curious to see what the date code is.
