Hi all,

I'm off to the States next year to stay with some friends. Long story short they suggested a bike ride with some of their crew while I was out there.

In principle I'm up for it, however I'll have to bring some gear, gloves and a jacket fine but a helmet seems like it would be a royal PITA.

Has another carried a helmet on a plane before? Are there any provisions? I can't see it fitting in a suitcase and even if it did I'd be worried about damage.

Also anyone know how american insurance works? Without a lot of fucking about will it be that hard to ride a bike loaned by a friend out?

Yeah I was thinking, that I can get a cheap one for £40~. I'd rather take one if I can I was thinking of leaving it out there, I have an old Shoei that is just taking up room would rather wear that than a cheap lid.

I'm not 100% but I'm sure it would or could be counted as carry-on luggage, think it depends on who you are flying with so I would check with them.

for insurance cant vouch but a quick search turned up :https://www.hctravel.com/html/us_m-c_insurance.html

Already looked at that. I THINK, that in the US they insure the vehicle not the driver, so I'm hoping I'll be covered.

Should maybe fire off an email to one of the "big" insurance companies in America and ask them about short-term coverage, give you quotes, what the policy covers etc...

Check travel insurance in case you get spazzed by a Sem-i and need repatriation.

Sure your helmet wouldn't fit in a deep hard case? Should protect it somewhat.

Helmet-law state? I imagine it's unlikely that there won't be a spare lid in your size kicking around. Pack rats, we are.

I took mine as carry-on when I flew to collect the GSX from Milan (via Alitalia, from City Airport).

Nobody batted an eyelid.
Mind you, the plane was half empty so there was plenty of room in the lockers.

But there were no security queries, certainly.
They just made me put it thru the scanner along with my coat and carry-on luggage.

I flew to Stockholm last year to do a corporate product launch presentation alongside Ben 'Stig' Collins. He carried his lid with him as hand luggage. Not sure if Stigs get some kind of special treatment?

I'd put it in a helmet bag and carry-on.

When I went on holiday to Florida, I had one delivered to the apartment. Ordered it online before I left home.

I didn't wear it and took it home with me. I just packed it in my hold bag. Doesn't take up much space as it happens because you can put stuff in it as well as around it.

Has the advantage you can get yourself a minimalist, low-profile 'murican pisspot lid that would be illegal in the UK.

Mine fits nicely in my rucksack, never been asked to show my hand luggage at check in.

I had a rucksack as well and no one batted an eyelid.

Me too. I could buy that old Shoei for said £40 rather than you leaving it behind and around with transporting it. If it's big enough for my swede of course.

I just didn't use one. American roads are so large and pretty well laid out I just didn't care. Can't say I'd do it on the regs but as a one or two off it didn't bother me.
