Right here at the junction of Timber lane onto Leighton Street as you leave Woburn Sands - there's a nice Truvelo camera - all shiny and new and waiting for the unwary.

Watch out for it, it's hidden behind an existing sign and is not visible until it's too late.

I watched it catch the 3 cars in front of me despite warnings by me and other motorists coming the other way Smile

Doesn't appear to be listed here:

https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/streets-transport-and-parking/road-safety/vehicles/speed-cameras

You could have a bawww at them about it being hidden:

It's new - within a couple of days i think looking at it. I'll email them though!

mail sent;

If this is in the interests of road safety, why is the new fixed camera in Woburn Sands not listed in your database on the website?

https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/streets-transport-and-parking/road-safety/vehicles/speed-cameras

And if it's in the interests of road safety rather than revenue generation .... why is it hidden behind an existing sign.

I have no issue with them - i don't muck about in 30s 40s or 50s and will take my chance in the NSL stuff.

However if they are going to say they publish the location of ALL cameras in the interests of road safety and then don't - i think it's fair to post up that a new one has appeared.

I use that route twice a day and have done the last 18 months - haven't seen ( or heard - am away to google now) one single accident or fatality. As it stands, it's well placed to catch people getting on the gas a little early or coming off the throttle a little late but little else.

If you hide them behind things, all you do is encourage the paranoid to stand on the brake pedal with little to no warning.

I'm genuinely confused as to why they put it where they did.

Once i can find a number to contact - i'm going to ask pretty much that question under a freedom of information act request.

There are rules about where these things can be placed and i'd be interested to see what the data on that site is.

won't be a problem if this happens
Quote:

Ford is to sell a car that can read road signs and adjust its speed accordingly to ensure the vehicle is not driving too fast.

The speed-limiting tech can be activated via the steering wheel and briefly overridden by pressing firmly on the accelerator.

The car company suggests the facility will help drivers avoid fines and could reduce the number of accidents.

However, one expert said the innovation might only serve as a "stopgap".

"There's a plan for speed restrictions to be beamed to your car's computer systems and controlled from there, rather than requiring street sign visual recognition systems," said Paul Newton, an automotive industry analyst at the IHS consultancy.

"This would be part an extension of the networks that will connect vehicles, allowing cars to warn those behind them if they are slowing down, which is all part of a move toward autonomous vehicles that drive themselves."

Phone call number 18 and still no closer to speaking to anyone that knows anything about it!

From speaking to the camera installations dept. it seems Councils are now free to place these things wherever they feel like and the old rules and regs have been defunct since some time in 2007. The Police do not have any input into where they go, they simply operate the sites once they are installed.

He reckons no lines on the road means it's not active yet but that isn't something he'd suggest testing Smile

Apparently it's the first of many they have out for installation in the area.

That's fair warning if ever i heard it.

Going to have to pay a lot closer attention to the posted limits and what defines them.

I think my main beef with these things is that whilst you want people to be mindful of their speed and not speed ..... you equally don't want a nation of paranoids driving with one eye on their speedo and the other looking out solely for speed signs / cameras.

There is a world full of other important information the eyes should be taking in - like looking for motorbikes for one!!

The old "Safety Scamera Partnerships" used to get the money from speed cameras up until then. They could always have hidden them, but didn't get the revenue from them if they did.

That changed in 2007 when it became blindingly obvious that many of them were just being put up for revenue raising. Curiously, loads of them got turned off after that - I guess nobody is speeding now.

Why they're putting in new ones now, I don't know. Hopefully they're not getting the money from them again. Shocked

That's why i don't understand the placing of this one. The accident spot is on the blind crest OUT of the 30zone and in the NSL 200 yards further up the road. There are some houses but no school / pelican crossing.

So it's there to catch people speeding without contributing a whole lot to road safety - ignoring the fact that speed isn't the sole factor in road safety and that people shouldn't be speeding.

Locals get wise to fixed cameras really quickly so it's just there to catch the unwary and it won't change their speed if they are already speeding ... so again, I'm unclear on the benefit of this location over any other number of real blackspots.

I'm going to ask the Council tomorrow what the justification is for it in that spot.

Well I for one am glad of this heads up.
I usually bang along this stretch at a ferocious rate of knots, looking for unsuspecting kittens.

PostPosted: 10:32 - 08 Apr 2015    Post subject: Re: New Speed tax Camera - Woburn Reply with quote

Morning All,

I came across this thread and forum after a Google search about this new camera on Leighton Street. I passed it at a moderate rate of knots above the allowable very late last Wednesday night. I wasn't looking for it but didn't see it until it was too late. To be honest i've exceeded the limit on this stretch on more than one occasion and must conceed, if caught, it is a fair cop.

Anyway, I found some further information on this camera site (and others) which will be of interest:

https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/Images/120401_Marston%20Vale%20LATP_Final_tcm6-29367.pdf

https://woburnparishcouncil.org/previous-meetings-minutes/

Looking at the Parish Council meeting minutes, it suggests that this will not be a permanent camera, only a fixed camera casing. The Police will rotate a number of cameras around new casing sites in the area. It also mentions the CBC (which I assume refers to Central Bedfordshire Council) have a deadline to commit to expenditure on the new cameras of 31/03/15. If they met this deadline, it is unlikely that this camera expenditure has yet been implemented even if the individual Parish Councils have got the casings at the camera sites sorted.

So, given how newly erected this casing is, I make the hopeful assumption that it is not active yet. I guess there is a chance it may never be. But from a theoretical safety point of view, something which looks like a camera is as effective as something which generates fines.

Smile

Camera is front facing, not 1 fuck is given.

30mph speed limit, houses on both sides of the road, parked cars. Probably not the smartest idea to go hooning through there anyway.

The NSL just AFTER the speed camera is another matter though Mr. Green
