Right, had a couple of spare hours this afternoon to get the oil filter/oil changed and fit new brake pads all round.

Once I got to removing the old filter I stabbed it with a screw driver (my usual technique, did one if my cars the same way the other day) and began turning. It's got to about 5mm gap between the filter and engine but no amount of turning seems to remove the damn filter. It does however start to tighten back up.

It's worth noting that I've not been able to turn the damn thing by hand at all. It was supposedly changed this time last year by the bmw dealer I bought it from and only done 2k.

Beginning to think it may have been cross threaded.

It started getting dark so gave up. I'll remove the fairing for more access in the morning and have another go before reverting to cutting the filter casing in half and seeing if I can see what's stopping it. I may try fully tightening it and starting again also.

Any tips before I do?

It's a gsxr 1000 k6 with a hefty 20k on the clock.

5mm gap sounds more than enough to get a screwdriver in and lever it off?
I think it would be difficult to do much damage to anything other than the filter.
I guess the threads got damaged by over tightening or being crossed at first attempt to fit it.

That method is only really for hard times - did you not try to remove it by hand first?

Anyway - apply pressure against it in the gap you've opened to prise it away and twist off using any method you see fit now there's a hole in it

Was a bit worried about damaging the thread on the engine by prying it off?

Yes I did try turning by hand first but it's been tight the whole way around, I can't even do it up by hand (probably could with more access but it's much tighter than it should be.

NEVER poke a hole in an oil filter to get it off. Embarassed

If you do have a problem then it will only be a worserer one when you puncture the filter case. Smile

If you pry the gap you do risk damaging the sealing face and breaking the spigot. If the filter base can be removed (which is doubtful) then try that so you can work on it at a bench.
If you damage the spigot of seal face you may need a new engine block.

And BMW have used a tool to fit the filter when it should only be hand tight 3/4 turn and then only nipped if there is a leak.
Kawasaki 'tool' filters on the Japanese whankers. I only hand tight my Kawasaki filters though.

Got it off. All sorted, just need to bleed the brakes when I find my tube.

Even the new filter was tight to do up, could not do it by hand past half way, and I tripple checked the threads. Not a problem for another year though...

I did how ever seem to misplace my main bike key/alarm fob yesterday after I came in. Im hoping it will turn up in the house but there's always a chance I left it in the garden in last nights winds. Can't find it anywhere. Sad

Found it tonight, in the fridge Laughing

Bike key normally lives on top of the fridge away from the kids thieving hands, should have worked it out a bit quicker mind.
