im looking to improve my mechanic skills and need suggestions for a good project bike. i'd like something simple to work on, fun as i'd like to keep it afterwards and a budget of no more than £1000 including replacement parts, paint etc. i've always wanted to do a cafe racer. whats peoples opinions on this honda cb250rs?

I'd either try to service and fix your own bike or else run a nail as a daily commuter and have to keep it on the road for A-B use.

A project bike is because you want one, and want to restore a particular machine. Its pointless if you just want to improve your spannering skills, you might as well work on other people's bikes in that case.

And as a project bike for a restoration, a strict imposed budget will never work out. You'd be taking on the resto for the love of it,and be spending whatever it takes to get it done, that's how it works IMO.

It's really up to you but I would start with a simple aircooled motor. Preferably a twin or single.

I used to have 250rs it's actually one of then first engines i took a apart. It has a tendency to crack around the spark plug hole, also strips it's threads , the oil filter is just a mesh jobby so don't miss oil changes(2000/3000). I remember a lot of threads and stripped bolts on that engine due to the previous owner and the use of red gasket seal. So beware. Apart from that it was fairly light and excellent on fuel... it wasn't a motorway bike by any means. I think many of them will be very tried by now regardless of what the owner says. V easy to clock
