I did wonder if it might have worked with alternative early versions.
It does seem almost plausible that the phone might transmit some part of the key fob signal if the sending device is held close to it.

I'm guessing it's a wifi link? Maybe frequencies allowed originally, combined with relatively crude transmiiter, did have a harmonic acting on mobile phone frequencies.

Actually the snopes article more or less says the same.

How would you lock the keys in the car if the keys were in the car?

Yeah, that is common on most things now. Our Punto and the A4 do the same thing.

Both my BMWs go nuts when you close the last door in pre-exit locked mode , close the boot when when the car is locked or try to lock the car with the key in it. Hazards flash, alarm goes off at low-volume, if the car is locked it'll unlock all doors, if key is in boot it'll open the boot. You're left with no doubts something is wrong!

I very much doubt it
all phones cut out the upper and lower frequency ranges in the human voice (20Hz - 20KHz) down to about half that to make transmission easier

the frequency's used for key fobs is much higher and would not be detected or transmitted down a mobile phone

My mate has a Volvo that just won't open the doors unless you press the button first. If he left the keys in and shut the door, he's knackered.

When camping a few years back we saw a trio of lads do this with their punto.....and last year my father in law did it with his A4.

I've disabled it on my Amarok using VCDS.

Auto electrician here, have tried this legend many times, has never worked and should not.
But then theres no story in that is there.

Alot of my lock out customers try this and tell me. With straight face suggest their spare remote is dead.

Happens to our guys at work quite regularly. We use VW Transporters and if you press the remote button with any door open it doesn't lock the doors until the last one is shut. Typically, guys will unlock the van and star unloading but then put the keys on the wheelarch box in the back or on the front seat so they can carry equipment without the keys digging in them. They unload the van, shut the door and get that sickening clunk as the van locks and they realise that they don't have the keys.

'Eh'?

As far as I knew; they all use radio frequencies?

Presumably this suggests they are using sound?

Now, if they used a frequency that was used by one of the internal devices (such as bluetooth), maybe you could rig up an app to have a go at 'listening' on one end and transmitting on the other.
But don't think they do. Got a feeling there have at some point been devices that do this sort of thing for hijacking cars etc, but rather specialist.

Yes they are available, our friends focus was emptied of Christmas presents a few days before Christmas by thieves using a device that recorded the frequency of the central locking plip and then came back at night and robbed the lot.

they tried again on the same street a few night later and were caught in the act after a neighbour spotted them and rang the filth.
