Has anyone done one of these and got a home built special registered and on the road? I've google'd, but I'm after real world experiences.

The reason I ask is that I'm looking for something to tinker with, and the guy I used to race for has several fantic frames (with VINs) in his loft, numerous 50cc engines tuned by him to make lots of power (for a 50) and various forks, wheels, brakes and other bits and bobs.

Unfortunately as he's had the bits for years (20 odd) he hasn't got any paperwork or number plates - he can't even remember what model the frames were from ! Ignoring this, how hard would it be to get it registered if I built something from all of the best bits ?

His 50cc race bike was/is a cracking little thing to ride and something similar, geared for about 70, with a tiny frontal area and as light as possible on the road would be a laugh.

worst case scenario (assuming it passes SVA or whatever has replaced it) you'd end up on a Q plate and a bit of faff insuring.

Does he not know what the frame is from to be able to get the manufacturer / owners club to date the frame from it's serial number?

issue I can see is getting it road registered as it may have to have linked brakes and emissions crap the same as a new model...

I believe there's an exemption from the Eurobollocks for one-off and small volume bikes (under 75 a year).
