NobKitten is getting a bit short of space, so I am planning on changing the Raid type.

Currently I have the following setup using 4 x 3TB drives.

I would like to change it to a Raid 5 config, using the 4 drives available and a 2TB drive in my pc.

My plan,
Back up what I can from M1 to separate 2TB drive.
Break down M1 (drive 1 & drive 2)
Pull a single drive from M2 (drive 3) - hoping the data still be safe and accessible.
Create a Raid5 using the 2 drives from M1 and the single drive from M2 (drive 1, 2 and 3)
Copy data from the other M2 drive (drive 4) over to Raid5
Grow Raid5 to incorporate drive 4.

I've asked the Raid boffins over at OMV (the NAS o/s I'm using) if this is a workable plan.

Lets see what happens.

That *sounds* Ok, but I'd be wary of a) still being able to access the data a drive down on M2, and b) being able to grow the RAID with a new disk. The grow process will take ages... if it works.

I don't know enough about consumer storage to be able to say if it'll work or not.

That's the main thing.
I probably wont need access to the data throughout process, just want it to be there so I can copy it to the new Raid5.

Aye sounds OK to me in theory. Any chance of getting hold of some spare hard disks? Got any old PCs with disks you could salvage?

Righto.

Tested the process in a VM.
Config'd the VM to match NobKitten, using 5gb virtual drives.
Pulled a drive from a mirror, broke the other mirror.
wiped the 3 drives, created a Raid5 through the web GUI
It all went smoothly.
Testing growing the raid now.

I think you need to archive off all of your porn totally legitimate tv shows and films off to an optical storage device. I recommend CD's. Wink
