The US is one of more than 50 nations that do not recognise Mr Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate president.

Just about every recognised democracy in the world does NOT support Maduro.

Countries recognizing presidential power during the 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis as of 12 July 2019:

Recognize Guaidó Support National Assembly

Recognize Maduro

I suspect that Trump suspects high level officials in the government are siphoning off whatever meagre finances are left in the Venezuelan economy for a nice early retirement.

But that's the sort of thing dictators in third world countries do; certainly not something a democratically elected "man of the people and defender of the revolution" would do, no sir!

A quick look at Venezuelas wiki entry and it seems all theyve had us one crackpot after another running the show. Its thw curse of poor countries that discover they have oil.

So...... Independent Scotland. Ahem. Shall we start calling her Nicola Chavez?

I was on a ship running from Cardon refinery up the Maracaibo lake and to Catia La Mar in the late 70's. Venezuela then was a lovely friendly place with pretty well off people.

What was weird was that while a large percentage of the population lived in pretty basic tin shacks, parked outside said shack would be a new American car. Funny priorities.

I left South America in 1981 and Venezuela was still a very prosperous country then but it seems that they were too dependent on oil revenues and when the oil prices collapsed in the 80's they never really recovered.
