At the risk of turning this into PCF...

There is water right up to the the bottom of the plug in my bath, is this right? I've never seen that before.

I pulled the cover off to have a look and the waste drops down for the then rises to meet up with the main waste pipe. I can't see how it would drain all the way. I've tried a rod, drain unblocker and plunger it hasn't made a difference.

Possibly related the washing machine plumbed in the kitchen is making gargling noises periodically when on. Something wrong with my waste maybe?

water won't flow uphill but can seep through capilary action, its likely that the pipe is slightly blocked with debris and combined with the gradient is enough to stop the water flowing. Take the pipes apart and clear out providing not solvent welded. Only adjusting the height so there is a fall from the bottom of the bath and washer to the drain will solve it long term. if its not possible to adjust the drain height then consider a saniflo unit to pump the waste uphill.
