Just iPlayered it. 100%

All the way.

+infinity to all of the above. You couldn't have scripted a better final, and it was a thoroughly well deserved win for both machine and man.

Special mention to Nuts for the great collective driving, that massive upset over the favourite, and forcing them to cannibalise their own kill to make a specific defence which you could see taking a whanging great hit in the rematch. Nobody's laughing at them now, I suspect. Clapping

Lessons they (BBC) need to take away from this:

- more robots in play equals more excitement
- I would say clusterbots as part of a main build should be fucked off
Just having a little remote control pit activate button (let’s be honest - that’s what it was) is slightly unfair
- stop calling someone that just beat the defending champion the “joke” entry
- more red heads that make squeaky excited noises during matches needed
- that floor flipper needs its edges sorting so that it isn’t a hazard, the properly low robots almost got grounded on it a few times that I noticed. Funnily enough not mentioned by the commentary

Thoroughly enjoyed it, and never thought a flipper could still win in 2017!

The ten way wasn't as good as expected though, no one was flipped out of the arena and there was no shrapnel embedding itself in the perspex while everyone seemed to want to get into the pit. It's like they were all a bunch of previous losers or something Thinking Still, it did add to the story in the end..

What people have to remember is that this is filmed over a few days, not over a few weeks, so things like the floor have to be bodged so they can continue to fight, also makes repairs and alterations harder for the Teams,
Nuts, as good as it was, was just random in it attack, it didnt, unless another robot tried to attack, and its blows were again uncontrolled, its damage was awesome, but the driver didnt plan it, it just went in circles and hoped for the best in the end,

Im not sure the winner was right though, damage and control were with last years winner imo,
it is called robot wars, not robot sit in a corner while others battle . . .
Which some may see differently, that I know,

I did have to chuckle when Bermoth(SP) sat on the pit when it dropped(hope that isnt a spoiler),
he was the one who threw his toys out in previous years, and stormed off.

You don't see any inconsistency there?

Like Gabriel, like Nuts, cluster bots are something that throws a spanner into the faster-spinner-versus-flippier-flipper arms race. If you have to change your bot or driving to deal with them, that's the reality of asymetrical warfare.

Knights versus peasant archers, carpet bombing versus punji stakes, it might not be honourable, but all that counts at the end of the day is who goes home in a bin bag.

That's the first time I've really seem them effective. The only part I didn't like was when they grounded Carbide* (I think) and they nearly got counted it, but that's the judges being quick to initiate the countdown as usual, I guess so they feel involved Rolling Eyes

Was it not planned in the design of the robot? Smile I find Gabriel annoying but similarly against Carbide it all started to make sense. I think it's brilliant that someone with (I assume) a lot less budget can beat the favourite with an unorthodox design.

I'm confused, you mean in the 10 way? It was last robot left standing and they were left standing Eh?

*probably why they destroyed one at the end Laughing

I just watched it on catch up, brilliant TV.

Eruption took a hell of a lot of damage in the final but it was all cosmetic, everything was still working. I'm glad he won. Thumbs Up

The lad's a proper tactician with great control. Watching when Carbide was chewing away at him, I believe that he was very carefully controlling the distance, letting it leech some energy out of the spinner without rushing in and getting mullered, or backing off and letting it get properly up to speed.

Props also for not fitting any daft "entanglement devices" that achieve the square root of sod all.

Just caught up last night as well................... what an episode though

Eruption was a worthy winner, and worthy of a Hollywood movie script, from near zero to hero in the space of 4 battles, and the punishment it took on that last battle was pretty epic

I did have as little chuckle to myself when Rapid went out in spectacular fashion............. only to then wait for the encore, couldn't have happened to a nicer team Wink

Nope. I just should have quantified it better.

"more full size robots in play equals more excitement"

Thumbs Up

The clusterbots are not exciting to watch, one of them pitted Behemoth before it even got to attack anyone.

the same one also tried to wedge under Carbide to lift its wheels to count it out, Not really tennis in my eyes. imho.

I thought that was hilarious, it's just a shame that Sulky McBlubberchin didn't ragequit again.

Well, no, it's Robot Wars. All's fair, right?

In Battle Bots i believe that sort of behaviour is against the rules, i think there is something like a 10 second rule for pinning robots using other robots, after that they must release the other bot, seen the ref step in a few times and call robots off

But then in Battle Bots, they don't have such things like the pit or floor flipper, as most of their bots have decent enough weapons to tear each other to shreds without relying on arena traps

Septic sports seem to be dominated by umpires and referees though. For a nation that bleats on about freedom, they sure do seem to be sticklers for procedure.

True enough, but in theory you could make a bot in it's entirety to be an entanglement device to stop any other robot moving, then just park it and wait for them to be counted out...........

............ oh, but you would need a mini bot that kept moving do you didn't get timed out yourself Wink

Bots have to have weapons. I'd ass-u-me that means at least one of your cluster has to have something weapony.

If 60% of your bots (by mass) are immobilised or rekt, youuuuuuu're outa here.

It is an interesting discussion.

Obviously tactics play a large part in the wars, but I think if you are designing smaller bots to slide underneath bigger bots... With the sole idea being to just stop them moving and therefore stop them attacking other bots.

(I.e. stop them doing the one thing that the program promises) - then the whole thing would get a bit dull.

3-2-1 activate!.

"And clusterbot 1 has got underneath xxxyyyzzz and they have been counted out"

cant wait to watch that. Rolling Eyes

I would imagine there would be rule changes should that become the norm, but it appears (at the moment) to be a legal tactic to do just that

Whether Battle Bots has already gone through this stage before, hence the 10 second rule, i'm not sure, but i know Battle Bots allowed cluster bots some time ago, and their rules are seem to be much more relaxed in some respects, especially when it comes to weapons (Drones, projectiles etc all allowed)

anyone see tonight's exhibition matches?

Billed as a European Final, clearly tacked on to the end of the same event, was fun in its own way, I liked watching Apollo attacking the house robots.

Being honest, Apollo V House robots, was the only real battle.

These were some of the battles we watched. My boy made it onto the screen whereas my starring moment was rather a 'Mike Wazowski' affair!

I hear Carbide is to be retired and replaced with...well, something better I'd assume.

I can't help but think Mr Bean whenever I see the Eruption kid, can't just be me Shirley.

Sounds like in the next episode they'll have some N.American competition, so it could be interesting. UK teams get their arse handed to them in Battlebots, Apollo have obviously never watched it if they think UK robotics are leading the way...

Wasn't it Diotoir who had their fair play award stripped from them when they were caught sabotaging another robot (in old Robot Wars)? And Laughing at the floor hitting championships.

It's only when you see Ms Scanlon stood next to Sir Killalot you realise the size of the house robots. Shocked

I think the house robots are 300kg but Sir Killalot weighs 700kg. No wonder Apollo (110kg?) was struggling to flip him Smile

I know the HR weigh more, think SK is closer to 750. Shocked
