Quickshifters - what exactly do they do and how to use

So I am back in the dark ages with clutches etc.

New bike is coming with a quickshifter and I am too embarrassed to ask how to use them, why have them etc


Please enlighten me

Quickshifter cripples the ignition when you shift gears, so you do not have to shut the throttle to relieve the stress on the gears.

Just ride and when you want to shift up, don't shut the throttle, don't touch the clutch lever, just shift the gear up.

Perfectly useable on the road but as said better up higher in the Rev range for a silkier shift, after you've used it you won't want to go back

As suggested above, and you will need a power commander on your bike, well at least my one goes through my powercommander anyway.

Fitting mine this weekend actually, if you want, I can do a write up on the installation for you.

You can still put a shifter on a bike without an ECU or Power Commander, although it's a much more simple "plug and play" fitting with the PC. Just need some way of interrupting the ignition. Holeshot Racing make an ignition kill box that can be used on most bikes (except maybe a Badger ).

I have only ridden one bike with a quickshifter. It was an opportune "want a go on this?" moment at a rideout last year - the bike was a Ducati 899 Panigale.

At the time I didn't get any briefing, just "fancy a go?" (I think I may have been in the saddle with the engine running before he finished the question). Anyway, as I am riding it I start thinking - this is the sort of bike that probably has a quickshifter. I bet it does. Let's see.......

And with the throttle kept open and a stroke of the left foot I was greeted with the most perfect upshift. And that is ALL the familiarisation I needed - after that it was the most natural thing in the world, as if I had always ridden with one. Any and all upshifts - hard on the power or just bimbling along. It was so compelling I considered working out how I might fit one on the Thundercat, but gave it up as an expensive, bodged-up idea that would never replicate the experience I had just had.
