Tail bags and carrying security chains plus a disc lock...

My current bike doesn't have a carrier for a top box so am wondering what options do I have for carrying a security chain about until I park the bike when around town or on my daily commute to work? I am buying a 16mm chain plus my bike is rather old so it has a solid front disc brake so I can't even fit a disk lock to it unless you know better?

Bung it in any old bag / rucksack and strap it down properly.

I keep mine under the seat. Just don't try carrying it in a rucksack, it'll play merry hell with your back.

I carry my 19mm Almax, and sometimes 2 disk locks, in my Kriega tail pack.

Sits nicely, doesn't wiggle around, doesn't affect my riding. Just take care to ensure that the chain is evenly distributed around the bag so the bike isn't heavier on one side than the other, or riding gets a bit annoying.

You won't be getting it on the front if that's the case. What's the rear like? But in all honesty, if they're breaking your 16mm chain, they're more than likely able to break your disk lock too, so I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to fit on a disk lock.

Oxford also used to do a seat bag thingy which served a similar purpose. Just make sure it got good straps and a locking system as you don't want everything redistributed on the road!

I have a little oxford X4 tank/tail bag that will take a heavy chain if velcroed to a seat/rack. Wouln't magnet it to the tank with a heavy chain in it. Useful bit of kit. The mini tailpack mentioned above looks like just enough bag to do the job.

I use this lextek tail bag.

What's most important is not the tail bag itself but the mounting options it has and works best for your bike. I've left two straps under the seat permanently that connect to the hooks on either side of the bag and then tension them until it's so tight the bag doesn't have any room to move at all with nothing in it.

I agree, you need the bag really secure if you have a heavy chain. Bungees are not going to do it.
