Mum's trying to change insurance over from her supplier
Policy has always been in dad's name but mum has been main driver for at least 15 years
They have 15 years no claims on the policy
Can mum use the no claims from the policy if she swaps the names round
This is all because dad's not well and doesn't drive now

So who has been declared as the main driver for these 15 years...

If not your mum. then that is fronting......
Best not to mention that she has been the main driver. Might not go down too well....

Just why has the policy NOT been in her name? given what you have explained....
Cost can't have been a option over that long.

Asides from the answers above, are you talking about switching the names around on the current policy and then changing insurer? If so, you may find that you can't just switch the names like that anyway and the current insurer would require a new policy to be setup.

Sounds like your mother is a named driver on your father's policy. Some insurers allow named drivers to earn NCD, but you'd have to check the policy / contact insurer.

Some policies (like mine) have a mechanism where named drivers can build their own no-claims on the policy. It's explicitly stated though, and I've no idea if it comes close to the no-claims you build up as the policyholder.

Mum's the main driver, and on policy, policy was In dads name as when they got one car it was in dad's name as he was driving more then mum
This changed when dad started working for himself and had his own vehicle
Now he has given up driving mum wants to change to her for when he dies

Regardless of whatever spin you put on it, she's got zero no claims.

And your point is?

Op said policy in Father's name but mother main driver. Policy is supposed to be in the person who drives the vehicle the most (main driver in Ins lingo).

Not necessarily. I did this for years as a student. Dad's policy, but with me recorded as the "main driver". The insurance company knew the score. Car was registered as being kept with me at university. They were happy enough to come out and collect it from my student house for repair when I had a break-in.

The main driver and the owner of a vehicle may not be the same person. Insurance is typically in the owner's name. But the owner may never set foot in it.

Waiting for arry to confirm, but I've had no luck getting insurers to swap the policyholder (and therefore NCD earner) from me to Mrs Borg on either car policy, despite her being the declared main driver on both of them. Sad

As Roger says

And the policy holder does not have to be the main driver - but the main driver must be properly disclosed so that it can be rated accordingly
