I did love him (and Magnus Pyke, for similar reasons) - they don't seem to have the same calibre of loveable slightly insane scientists on TV anymore.

I liked the mention in the beeb article that he turned up for his 80th birthday party on a fire extinguisher powered scooter. That sounds entirely in character.

I don't remember them doing any programmes together, but in my mind I always link those two with Robert Alexander Baron Schutzmann von Schutzmansdorff, AKA Bob Symes, engineer, inventor and railway enthusiast extraordinaire.

Not quite in the same arm twirling, fast talking mould, but exuded passion about anything technological (and he had a spectacular beard!).

Although I have been enjoying the programs hosted by Jim Al Khalili. Note I said "enjoying", not necessarily "understanding" Laughing But certainly not a chap in the lovable eccentric mould. *Sigh*

I thought he'd died years ago - I assumed he was about that age when he did the Great Egg Race. But he must have been still in his 40s when he started doing that. Funny how your perception of ages is different when you're but a whippersnapper.

Heather North, the voice of Scooby-Doo's Daphne, dies at 71.

No celebrity, but nostalgic for some I guess.

Got to agree. Whilst Daphne was the "traditionally beautiful" one and a bit stand-offish, you just got the impression that Velma would be a very, very dirty girl and a lot of fun Smile

John Young, astronaut - flew on the first manned Gemini mission, first man to fly solo around the Moon, Lunar Rover driver and first pilot of the space shuttle.

There's a man who had some stories to tell the grandkids.

So you mean he was an actor as we all know that no one actually went to the moon and it was all done on a movie set. Smile

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42671503 British comedy actress Bella Emberg - best known for her role in The Russ Abbot Show - has died, aged 80.

One of her most memorable characters was Blunder Woman, the comic sidekick of the hapless superhero, Cooperman.

Emberg also appeared on The Benny Hill Show, Z Cars, and Doctor Who.

Her agent said she would be "greatly missed", while friend and pianist Bobby Crush described her as a "truly gentle soul".

again, one for those of a certain age.
