You know you're getting on a bit when soccer players who were active in your teens start passing on. Shocked

I don't suppose we'll ever know why he died so young, as the usual media outlets are far too busy bringing the race angle into the story.

I heard it on the radio news earlier. Out of all the people in football they could have chosen to comment, they picked someone from the "Kick it out" anti racist campaigners.

Can he not be remembered as a footballer, not some pioneer for black people involved in football? Neutral

To some people that will be a far bigger achievement then merely playing football.

He died of a heart attack at 59 - that's sadly not particularly unusual

Slightly disappointed in myself to miss this by a couple of days, Dan Gurney, Yank racing driver of great repute.

Inventor of the 'Gurney Flap', first F1 driver to wear a full face helmet, first American to win a championship GP in a car of his own construction and inventor of the victory champagne spray.

Also said to be the only driver Jim Clark really feared - proper racer and all round nice guy.

'Celebrity' cheapens him. I'd go for legend or pioneer.

He was so self effacing, I think he would've baulked at legend, but pioneer works.

I also missed out the accolade of being the driver that gave Porsche it's one and only F1 championship win as a full constructor.

It's a shame though that the guy who played him will always be remembered as a gay purple puppet rather than the classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer he was.

My fave headline of today is, "Dipsy Pays Tribute....."
