Hang on, we've got a good conspiracy theory brewing that the NHS have some super secret treatment plan using Chinese orphan pituitary glands. The Royals get the same, I'm led to believe (by David Icke).

According to his wikipedia page, Hawking was diagnosed at the age of 21 in 1963 when he was a nobody, and he was given a 2-year life expectancy then. That's 55 years ago. It really makes no sense that he would or could have received some better form of treatment starting way back then that would have accounted for his longevity.

I agree.
Bitching about health economics is ridiculous, considering the time he started to suffer with it.

No point denying that as he got more famous he probably had better treatment, but he was no special famous-guy when he first succumbed to it.

But back then ... it would have been a surprise to anyone (himself included, I expect) that he'd haye lasted long enough to do something to even get famous.

Reportedly his first words when he came round from the surgery were 'I'm back'. Legend.
