Sort of. The F104 Starfighter was 'affectionately' known as "the flying coffin", so not great in the air either Laughing

The F104G was the flying coffin, but the American version was known as 'The Missile with a man in it'.

I didn't know that. I wonder if that's how it started out being described until they started losing them!

Saunders Roe SR.177 project which could have been a world beater.

Ah, the days when Britain was in the forefront of aviation innovation! I noted this in that link:

Quote:
Maurice Brennan, the chief designer of the SR.53, had also become convinced of the necessity for an airborne radar unit to be carried by the aircraft, as the SR.53 was reliant upon on ground-based radar guidance and the pilot's own vision to intercept aircraft.

I wonder if he was ahead of the curve with that idea? It would be hard to envisage a combat aircraft without that these days.

Night fighters used airborne radar during WWII, but it may have fallen out of favour in the 50s.

Good point. But they certainly couldn't have imagined the complexity of modern systems! The story of airborne radar, and especially with regard to missile guidance, is a fascinating one. It was offshoots from military tech wars of this kind that have come to shape our lives today. I wonder ( Rolling Eyes Laughing ) how different our lives might be today if it hadn't been for such military innovation. Maybe we'd have still got where we are, but I think it would have taken much longer. Has it been a good thing overall? Thinking Things to ponder... Laughing

To keep sort of on topic, this latest 'Starfighter' death just goes to show how there have been plenty of times along the way when the civvies have inappropriately tried to use military stuff for other purposes Laughing

Meh, sometimes it works, sometimes it don't...

I worked with a guy back in the early 2000s who helped to design the ground following radar on the TSR2... It was extraordinarily advanced, even in the 1960s. It had an ability to re acquire a target that had dropped below the horizon.

In the last couple of years of my RAF service, I was with a unit developing the EW suite for the Harrier GR7. We had intelligence about all the world's missile systems, both ground-to-air and air-to-air. They certainly presented some problems for the team to tackle! If I remember rightly, the AI system of the F15 Eagle was the most difficult to overcome at that time.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_for_War

The chap goes on about western military tech possibly being counter-productive in control of continued conflict in today's wars.
The west don't fight mano-a-mano. Which any respectable Ragheaded Rebel finds abhorrent.

Warfare is a funny thing.

Rhoda went last week (Valerie Harper). Seeing the headline just made me remember the intercom and that dead flat monotonous voice, 'This is Carlton, your Doorman.'

Back African responsible for the deaths of many white people?
When do The Specials release the tribute song and we have a memorial ceremony broadcast all around the world with a fake sign interpreter?

Mind you, Mugabe wasn't a terroristfreedom fighter was he?

Laughing

Responsible for the deaths of many more blacks than whites. He was a class 1 cvnt that hopefully if there is a hell, will be down there in the pool of molten fire for hypocritical lying politicians,
.
Yes, it would have to be a very big pool. Thumbs Up
