Not sure if he really counts as a celeb, but I was sad to hear that the author Wilbur Smith has died. I love his books and I have read all of them at some point. My favourites were the Courtenay and Ancient Egypt series'.

I was given one of his books by a friend at work.

It was his autobiography.

Fascinating life lived to its limits.

And a great storyteller.

Graeme Edge, a resident of the town I've just vacated in Florida, but better known as the drummer for The Moody Blues, slipped past most peoples radars a couple of days ago.

And a few days earlier, for the acid house fans, Andrew Barker of 808 State.

I wasn't so keen on his 'Modern Africa' themed books but that 'River God' series was exceptional.

Oh, I.R. sad about Wilbur Smith, I did like his books when I was younger (yeah, especially the Courtenay ones).
Probably not read one for about 40 years, maybe might have another look.

Very much the same here. I did pick one up again not that long ago actually, but found it really hadn't aged well. A lot of it is really pretty racist; you can see it's written by somebody (a liberal white South African in the apartheid era) who believes themselves to be really non-racist and egalitarian, but OMG they are so not.

I think its inherent in a lot of boomers and certain generations of saffas.
That saffa we had here for a while (what was his name? Kronkenheim or something) reminded me of Wilbur Smith mentality, like : "its okay to be this racist cos I am a boor/bore/Boer".

In the same way that those type think its okay to shoot lions and hippos because they are in their back orchard.

"Clarissa Spencer-Churchill first met her future husband at Cranborne, Dorset (home of the future 5th Marquess of Salisbury) in 1936, when she was 16. He was already famous for his elegant attire and Homburg hat, and she was struck by Eden's unusual pinstriped tweed trousers." (Wiki)

Bless her.

I have to admit that it slipped past my radar.
I’m a little bit sad to hear that Sad .

I liked the Moody Blues, I still listen to ‘Days Of Future Passed’ on a regular basis.
