Prices increasing

I don't understand. I expected prices to go down over the winter months but if anything they're significantly higher than when I bought my bike in August. There seem to be just as many for sale too so it's not like there are fewer about to increase demand...

Monitoring eBay and Gumtree, I'm seeing:

Quads, buggies, jetskis and other assorted non-bike trash.
The usual "muts go 2NITE!!!!" ask-me-no-questions pikeybikes.
Dealer bikes at dealer prices.
"Appreciating classic" / "I know wot it's worth" / "NO MOAR TIMEWASTERS" bikes asking dealer+ money, that have been there for weeks or months.
Very briefly, reasonably priced and sanely described bikes in decent condition. Blink and you'll miss them, because they sell.

Agreed. It's just quite comical what people suddenly want for an old Fazer or Thundercat. They suddenly seem to be 50% higher than back in August. Even the auctions are hit and miss as to whether people will pay too much

Bought my near standard Fazer box eye for a grand last Feb which was quite a bargain with 21K on the clock.

It is now on 43K and I have seen similar age and mileage ones for up for around £1500.

I looked at Fazers last summer. There were a few around the £1000 mark. Now they're starting at £1500 for a less than perfect example. £2000 for a Thundercat?! Tatty old Bandits starting at £1500? Ouch

Well I'm attempting to sell my sprint and have been offered 2800 for it no questions asked. So naturally I'm going to advertise it at 3950 and see how I get on

Looking at a replacement my chosen model varies anything from 2750 to 5000 for similar bikes with similar miles. It's a wide open market place out there at the moment, clearly.

I had my eye on MT03's for months and all the bikes that were for sale at the start were still for sale at the end - albeit a couple of private sales had been sold to dealers who then ramped the price up and stuck em back up for sale, only for them not to sell

Glad it's not just my paranoia, been mooching the Bay for something to replace the ageing 'blade, prices... stupid!
Treated the old girl to a refurbishment, she'll have to soldier on for another season.
I'm just waiting for all the personal finance deal bikes to start appearing when they are kicked back in to the credit companies.

I think that you get 2 types of people selling bikes in "off season"

1) Cash strapped sellers who tend not to advertise nationally as they need a quick, local, sale.

2) Blokes who already have their next bike in mind, so want to maximise the deposit they put down using the old bike as collateral. As such, they're not in a rush to sell, so over-price to see if they get any loon with more cash than sense.

Ironically, when the latter realises his bike is worth nothing as a deposit, you see a "fire sale" around April time as he's already got his heart set on the new bike.

I agree, summer, especially late summer, is when bikes seem to hit a price floor.

This thread explains why my last few bikes have been bought new.

I paid £5,500 brand new for my Bandit 1250, rode it for 7 years and then got £3k for it as a trade in.

My current bike cost £5,300, 2 years ago. The cheapest currently on MCN is just under £4,500.

Throw in the numerous 0% finance deals on new bikes and it's hardly worth buying used.

I do tend to agree - seemingly you can buy a new bike and as long as you don't drop it, you can punt it on for strong money in a couple of years time easy enough. It seems sticking 5K miles on a new bike only drops it five hundred rubs or so under the sticker price in some places

Yep, case in point:

I'm currently looking at another bike. It's £7,300 OTR and they're offering me £3,800 for mine.

So that's £3.5k over 3 years, interest free.

Or less than £100 per month to drive a brand new, still under warranty, motorcycle. And there are plenty of similar deals out there.

No MOTs, no repairs, maybe the odd tyre or brake pad but that's it.

Rinse and repeat every 3 years and suddenly, paying £3k for a 10 year old bike doesn't look so appealing.

You seem to have a good idea of what you think a bikes worth so just make your offer and if they say "no" leave them your number and pootle off to look at the next over priced bike.

As to why used prices seem to be up, who knows? biking seems to be gaining popularity so maybe people are pricing to not sell as they're maybe not so keen to get rid of the bike as they or their missus likes to think. I bet the psychology of buying and selling is a very ancient study.

It seems to me that from around Mid-Nov to Mid-Feb there's not much 'on-line' worth looking at. As mentioned above, it all seems very expensive or very 'iffy' (or gets sold in the blink of an eye). That seems to be born out by the fact that most of them will still be 'for sale' in march or later.

Mid Feb to whenever the weather picks up (I mean the odd really nice day [usually april'ish] rather than waiting for the excellent weekend in July) there's some sensibly priced stuff and again in late sept through to Mid-Nov when people are clearing out before the winter.

That's just the way I see it...

completed listings on ebay usually gives a good overview of what stuff is going for, but alot of people are greedy and over value their prized crap

There just seems to be alot more people around than there was, with disposable income to piss away on bikes
