You need to know about colloidial oatmeal baths.

Or you will do by tomorrow night so best read up on it now and make sure you have some oatmeal in the house.

Pox-parties seem to be a thing of the older generation. When I was a kid and lived on an army estate they were the norm. My youngest got chicken-pox a few years ago and I suggested one for her friends - the younger mothers had never heard of the idea and were shocked that a so-called responsible parent could suggest such a dastardly act...

There was an article recently about an Anti-Vaxxer throwing a Pox-Party, and had medical professionals come down on her as disgraceful for trying to deliberately infect children with the illness.

DM link but here it is

Every childhood illness going we used to get all the kids together and try and infect them Laughing

Having not had chicken pox until my youngest caught it I can truthfully say getting everything out of the way when you were young was by far the best way to go. Thumbs Up

Did he give a reason?

Colloidial oatmeal is clinically proven to relieve itching and is extensively used in dermatology.

Wont make it get better any quickly but does relieve symptoms to get them off to sleep.

I'd do that, as pox can be dangerous when being infected as a adult. Thumbs Up

There is vaccination for adults, against the pox, but it's never 100% working + there are limitations on who can and can not be vaccinated. Adults are less resistant to the virus, so all the side effects of the pox virus, such as encephalitis, inflammation of the middle ear, sclerosing panencephalitis, pneumonia and so on are a very high risk.

I don't have children, but if I had to decide, I'd let them to get infected, as I was and all the people I know were. Thumbs Up

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Well, except polio, I guess.

Trouble is that chickenpox is a herpes virus so while primary infection is less severe as a kid, you are then a lifelong carrier. It can come back again as shingles in later life.

I can see there being a good argument to never exposing yourself to the virus in the first place. The fewer carriers, the less chance of the infection continuing in a population and the aim really should be to erradicate it.

We also now have pretty effective antiviral drugs against herpes viruses. They aren't used routinely because they are very expensive but if someone was suffering from more serious effects of herpes contracted as an adult, we can actually do something about it.

I don't think there is a "very high risk" of severe side effects of chickenpox as an adult. There is a higher risk but it is still small.

EDIT: So a 5-14% risk of pneumonia in adults, most of which recover uneventfully. Where is is of much more concern would be in a pregnant woman.

Encephalitis and meningitis are still classified as "very rare" which means < 1 in 10,000.

If she is older than 1 she can have piriton for the itching, ask at the pharmacy for advice. Also Boots make a fab aqueous cream combined with calamine which is great for the itching and stays on better than the traditional stuff in a bottle. My little boy got it when he was 10 days old, my daughter got infected at a birthday party. The birthday boy came out in the pox the day after his birthday party with 50 kids. They have also both had shingles, which is horrible and painful.

Our first only got about 15 spots and wasn't bothered with them, our 2nd child was absolutely covered and he suffered a week or 2 from hell.

Our 3rd we vaccinated it cost about £80.

think yourself its just pox and shingles, which can in some cases cause nerve damage.
