Hi all,

The soffits round the back look rotten, is this an easy job to do? A quick look at prices and it was eye watering to get someone to do it. More than I want to pay at the moment.

Slightly concerned about balancing a long bit of wood, drill impact driver and whatever else up a ladder Laughing

If DIY, look into aluminium portable scaffolding towers. Can probably rent them too.

I predict your untimely demise if working solo off of a ladder.

I did all the gutters on my own last summer, up ladder an it sucked balls

get a scaffolding tower!

dont just cover the old boards if they are rotten, remove em, refit new wood an slap the plastic on top - if our boards were rotten i would have done this but i just repainted mine

You can get the thick PVC stuff that completely replaces the wood, however trying to fix a 3 metre length up off a ladder is not going to be easy.
If you can get a tower around the house definitely take that route. When I did mine I was hindered by a narrow side alley which wasn't wide enough to put a tower up so I had to get proper scaffolding. A local roofer had his own kit and in the end I got him to do the job as his price vs scaffolding company + me buying material and doing it myself wasn't that big a saving.
I did spend a lot of time thinking about doing it off a ladder as that would of been a significant saving, but in the end decided it was going to be more trouble than it was worth.

Do this, uPVC needs no maintenance or initial painting. Make sure you remove the old shite first - the thinner uPVC lengths are meant for bodging over old rotten wood, great if you are a muppet selling up or a bodgit builder but if you don't want to be up there again in a few years time they're best avoided.

If you decide to hang them from a ladder find a good friend, another ladder and have him help you. 3m is not too grim by yourself but they come in 5m lengths as standard and it is definitely interesting hanging them by yourself in anything other than dead calm weather.

The soffits might well be asbestos (but are more likely to be fibreboard) so wear a paper mask when you pull them down - if you can do it without breaking the boards even better. DO NOT break them into smaller pieces (avoiding breathing the dust), nor put them in carrier bags and discretely dump them in the general waste at the tip...

I like to fit the soffits after the fascia boards, as you can slot them up under the return of the fascia which holds them up whilst you juggle with an Estwing and a mouthful of plastic headed nails!

Access tower is great but it's a pain in the butt manoeuvring around, especially if access round the building is tricky, two ladders usually works much better but make sure it's a mate you can rely on for working at height!!
