My bins gave up the job today so I need some new ones, The thread on the focus adjuster appears to have stripped but as they were 10 X 25 the field of vision was not wide enough for bird-spotting so i was thinking about a new pair anyway. Budget is about £50 and I am looking 10 X 50, 8 X 50 preferably rubber coated. Any recommendations please.

Slightly lower spec and a little over the budget (why do people always recommend stuff with the caveat "if you can stretch your budget a little"), but nonetheless an excellent set of bins...

Barr and Stroud Sahara 8x42

I've had a set of these for about 5 years now and they are excellent. Nice, clear and bright image. Easy to focus, handy size for tucking into bags etc. Rubber coated and waterproof (not very deep for not very long etc). Mine lived in the glovebox of my car for nearly two years, even with the constant and often rapid changing of temps, there was no sign of fogging. For a set to keep handy, I'd thoroughly recommend them.

edit: you can get the 10x42 for the same money and 10x50 for a tenner more.

If you don't mind used and a bit of weight to them then there are some decent ones on Ebay. I've probably got 5-6 pairs for no other reason that they were superb quality at a cheap price. Zeiss, Leica, bresser etc are worth looking out for and at the cheaper end Zenith, hanimex or vintage Japanese are worth a look.

Probably out of your price range but I have a set of Steiner Safari in 8x22 that are perfect for dropping in your pocket.

Ok I did read what you posted but you got me looking and the Olympus 8 x 40 DPSI Binocular seem to get very good reviews at £45 from Amazon.

Predominantly bought them for wifey who does a bit of birdwatching now and then. I often use them when I'm at sea to spot marker bouys for diving and for staring at boats/cliffs/anything interesting that drifts by. A few times a year I'll head to the horse track and I'll take them with me.

I should add she is bespectacled whereas I'm gifted with awesome vision and have no need for corrective lenses. Neither of us have any complaints about them.

Purchased, your fault if they can not distinguish a squirrel from a jackdaw.

I have a pair of Barr and Stroud series 4 10 x 42 ED, a bit outside your budget. Been looking on Ebay for Zeiss Jena Jenoptem 10 x 50 or 8 x 30 for cheap. Thumbs Up

Good, I can waste some money on a pair now that someone has tested them for me. Wink
