I need new boots.. these 25 quid TCX's have done 30,000 miles. Dry, waterproof, warm and not yet smelly... not bad... But the soles are getting thin, zips are broken, and I dont think they offer much if any ankle protection, which I would like. Im aware that ankle protection just shifts the force up your leg, which breaks instead.. but I'm told legs heal much better than smashed ankles.

Budget £100-150, and not dianese.

Alpinestars smx. They last for years and fairly comfy on and off the bike. Plenty of protection on them.

SMX5/6 WP. You won't get a better comfy sporty-ish boot for that money.

I'm a size ten and a half with a broad foot and a RST 46 is a good size for me. So fairly true to size. I could get a thick sock in there for winter if needed.

1+ for A* SMX-5 WP waterproof. The best waterproof road sporty boots ever.

And you can get them for £149:

I am 9 1/2 UK size shoes my Alpinestars boots have 10 1/2 US size and 45 Euro size marks.

Having said that I also buy and wear Euro size 44 shoes which converts to UK size 9.

Make of that what you want.

Do not buy online before you try the fitting. Go in the nearest shop and try one. The boot fit is subjective based on many things.

When I bought mine I was going in the shop to buy RST. Alpinestars were miles better fit and comfort for me.

My dianese were rubbish, zip broke within a year, after 5-7k miles they looked shit. They cost over £100 but much worse than the 25 quid TCX. Great if lightweight is more important than lasting 5 minutes. Given the choice of free dianese boots, Id rather tape bin bags round some sandles.

The A* SMX-5 WP are discontinued? I'm quite sceptical that there is a separate model for waterproof and it costs two-pairs-of-TCX's extra. That usually means it wont be waterproof.

Available here.

The reason that there's separate models is because money, one for summer that's vented and non waterproof and then one that's the opposite. WP = more expensive product.

edit: linked wrong boot.

No A* SMX-5 WP are not discontinued see them here at the oficial A* site:

https://www.alpinestars.com/s-mx-5-waterproof-boot-1#.ViQljyt1ZYc

These are different models ordered from less sporty to track pro models:

SMX-5, SMX-6, SMX-Plus and the pro track is Supertech R.

You can be all sceptical you want but FFS what kind of logic is that??

Had a pair of Alpinestars HydroSport Drystar , always a size bigger than my feet for a good fit with thick socks .. they were comfy but not warm enough, no real ankle protector, no toe slider etc .... got me through CBT / year on a 125 then a month or so on the CB500 but that was the end of February this year and it was barking cold.

I got the SMX6 Goretex from FCMoto early this year ( sale at the time and picked them up for £175) and haven't used the others again. Being diabetic, i need footwear that breathes as well as being warm / waterproof - these have been great ....and for boots with protection, crucially, they don't squeak Thumbs Up

However, as said above, i would always go and try a pair on with a good pair of thick socks to see what the fit is really like.

Update:

A* SMX 6 GTX boots have been bought. While I dont like the local shop, didnt want to wait an extra week for online. For the same reason, I paid a bit more for the goretex, as its in stock, and online was similar price.

I also wanted a new lid. I've been using a S600 through winter. It still has some miles left but it can be a spare. They dont make the S900 any more..

New season, so last years stuff is cheap. This gets 5 starts and is a bit lighter than the Speed-R I was going to get.

This is a big part of my choice, they have a large area of velcro and the zip is pretty much redundant. Zips are always the first thing to fail and very soon Ill need a new jacket.

Best cheap leather, winter jacket?

I'm a size 10 and Alpinestars boots in 44 (size 10) are a snug fit with thin socks.

I bought some fancy SIDI ST boots just before Christmas, but they are a bit stiff at the moment being brand new still.

https://feridax.truetracksoftware.com/7774.jpg

I'm off sick week after next so am going to wear them around the house to start breaking them in ready for wearing on bike. Thumbs Up
They seem massively more robust than the Spada Predator boots they are replacing. I also have high hopes for the small
vents on the side, being a fair weather rider only I tend to ride whenever we have a spell of nice warm weather.
But I do get a bit warm in all the kit, especially my feet. Hopefully the vents will do the biz and cool me plates down.

I ordered a half size bigger than my normal size 9. I could barely get the 9's on when I went to Fowlers and tried some on IRL.
I only hope they were worth the dosh. I was also looking at the Richa boots mentioned above but went for Sidis
to see if they are as good as I hear they are. On a lower budget I'd definitely consider the Richa boots, I have a few Richa
clothing items and they all seem very well made and more durable than the price would suggest. My Spada boots were about
£80 but after one year of relatively minimal use there's no rigidity in them any more, as a result they feel flimsy.

@Kramdra See how you feel about that visor clasp on that lid, left hand unlatch only, and fiddly as fuck even in
thin summer gloves. I have the Speed-R and the visor catch is the same. Just a heads up. Also if its the same
as the speed-R there's no ratchet on the visor pivots so you need to tighten it every now and then or it goes
baggy and won't stay up. It's by far the worst thing about what is otherwise a pretty good lid.

I can confirm they are comfy but not waterproof. Mine lasted less than 6 months before becoming waterlogged and returned (years guarantee was welcomed) and I paid the extra for Sidi B2 Goretex which I have had nearly 2 years now and still bone dry and I have ridden in some downpours.

Yes Im aware of that, shouldn't be a massive problem.

Im told there is a free upgrade from shark dealers for a notched mechanism, somewhat sceptical about if its good or the chance of me getting one from local...
