I apologise to Gerry up front but what slicer software are you using? Have you checked the nozzle size and filament diameter are correct?

Can you use to scan small parts for a bike, like say a switch housing?

No, the resolution is far too low. A laser-based scanning system is what you'd want for that. Or a vernier caliper and a decent CAD program.

A bit of Pronterface/Slic3r and Cura the board is an Arduino 2560 I think. All the settings seemed right Gerry is hopefully coming back round to help this weekend. Thumbs Up

I'm happy to say that I've finally cracked the settings for ABS. Really pleased with the speed and quality of print. Pity my photography isn't as good.

looks quite a bit like a gremlin in the photo. Just flatten his head and I reckon that is where the idea came from.

Looking at grabbing one of these.

How are they running now for those that got them in Feb?

Mine is working just fine. I've used about 2.5kg of ABS and PLA making parts for my bike and night vision stuff. They do benefit from an occasional tweak and I've had issues with retraction resulting in blocked nozzles, in my opinion this was down to Using slow SD cards. Bearings benefit from a proper lube, I used a Teflon spray which really reduced the noise. Parts are very cheap if you can wait for Chinese delivery.

So a year on.

What are the current recommendations for a sub £500 printer?

How're the folks in this thread getting on with the ones they had?

Cheers
Mark

Cetus 3d with a few upgrade parts like z axis balance and a heated bed.

Creality CR-10 is making all the waves at the moment.

I'm tempted...

I'm just getting to the tweaking settings and printing improved parts stage of my smartrapcore build and I'm mega impressed with the speed and accuracy of corexy machines, the MDF box that it's based on makes a horrendous amount of noise though so would recommend something based on aluminium extrusions.

If you're pretty handy with the tools have a look at the Hypercube Evolution with a view to enclosing for decent ABS prints.

Be sure to include filament, build surfaces, spare heat break/nozzles in your budget. I'm currently using Buildtak (don't set your first layer too low or it's a nightmare to remove the print) as a build surface on a aluminium heat bed and Hatchbox ABS with decent success. A friend has used cheaper filaments with mixed success but the quality is a real lottery.

Also depending on your ethical stance on hooky software you might have to budget £130 for Simplify3D Thumbs Up

I did, some might not like to though.

Watched a few video's of the CR-10, looks good but no-one seems to be pushing it to decent speeds in tests.

A8 is a bargain at 111 quid even if it's just to dip your toe and print the parts for a modern design RepRap.

Hello!

What do you guys do about the smell and the toxic gas(?) from printing with ABS?

I heard PETG have similar strength and heat resistance properties, but I just don't know...

Can't say I've really noticed the smell of the Hatchbox stuff to be honest.

It's an 18mm MDF box with an open top and an opening in the front so there's nowhere for fumes to be trapped, I've run some 3hour + prints and never noticed any smell when I've come back to it.

I will be closing the top off and fitting a perspex door at some point as I'd like it to act as a passively heated chamber, I'm only really interested in getting mechanically sound ABS prints from it.
