Hi everybody Smile

I'm a French Business student and I have to do some kind of market study. We've been asked to understand the bikers consumer's behavior in the UK to work on the introduction of a brand in the UK's market. (I will not quote the brand here unless someone ask for it, the purpose of this post is not advertising).

So my questions are the following : where do you guys would rather buy your bike's gear ? Do you prefer to buy it online if it's cheaper, or would you prefer to go out and try what you want to buy ?
When you go to shops, do you tend to go in big or smaller (independent) ones ?

In advance take you for your answers Wink

I buy in shops for gear because trying for size is important in my opinion.

This thread won't get many sensible replies so I'm just going to go ahead and start the transition. Very Happy

Serious question:

Why do students doing "research", not actually research the member groups they request information from?

I like to try on my gear before I buy it, motorcycle leathers and textiles seem to differ in size far more widely than normal clothes on the high street. Dainese's large has always been a bit small for me where as RST's large is spot on.

So you want us, not me I'm just a Slav, to do your work for your, completely for free, so you can benefit from it?

You know what, start a poll, people love clicking on things and options. If you were a real Business student, you'd be taught that basically the first day of the Marketing class. I know that because even though I'm a lawyer wannabe, I took one semester of Marketing, just to get an idea. Thumbs Up

Eh, it's honest, in an appropriate section, and there's no Survey Monkey.

I buy everything online now.

There's far more choice than in every the biggest shop, the prices are better, and it's at least as convenient as going to a shop and finding that they have every size in but the one that I need. Even having to return it for a different size is still easier than going to a shop.

Brand name means almost nothing to me. I've bought known brand (RST, Weisse) gear and the quality seems essentially the same as off-brand stuff.

The harder you market something at me, the more likely I am to avoid it, specifically because of the amount that you've spent on marketing it rather than making it.

I'm going to give a sensible answer because
1) No linky to stupid survey.
2) OP has better English than any other survey-ist ever on here.

I prefer to buy gear (clothing, helmets etc) from small local shops, apart from anything else you get free coffee and instant advice.

Un chat dans le fenetre sur le rue avec Claude.

I'm so glad I spent 5 years learning French at school. I knew it would come in handy one day.

I buy all my stuff online because the people who run motorcycle shops are generally surly, argumentative and want to charge shop prices for internet service.

I go to a shop because I want to see the thing and buy it immediately, not order it in, I can do that myself without leaving the house and without someone sucking their teeth and telling me it's not what I want.

In fact, I buy a lot of my gear over the internet AND outside the UK these days because ze Germans are both cheap and efficient and understand the customer is always right, even if he's wrong.

In life as in motorcycling, I prefer to buy in shops (instant gratification). My wife prefers to buy online. I get to do my wife's "admin" (having stuff delivered to work, sending it back if she doesn't like it) so she wins either way.

I love buying bike gear and I use all feasible methods:

(a) buy used stuff on ebay from all over the world and ask the seller to measure himself and try it on.

(b) buy new stuff online from German places like Polo Motorrad or Bogotto because they have things you can't get in the UK

(c) buy new stuff online from Japan if it's much cheaper than here, e.g. Arai helmets. I never seem to get charged for customs duty and VAT

(d) occasionally buy new stuff from local shops in London if the service is good and the price seems fair, say 20% higher than online. But this is rare. Most of the shops in London have a narrow choice, very high prices and ignorant fucktards behind the counter. The big ones have worse service but the small ones are usually too expensive and I don't know how they survive to be honest.

I can see them going from "I'm the only game in town," arrogance to "Sod off with telling me that you can get it cheaper online," grumpiness. Was there ever a period in the middle when it wasn't so?

Casting my mind back, I bought an RST jacket from J&S in 2010. At that point, their online prices were pretty good, but they'd marked it up by 50% in the shop. Fortunately, I'd printed off the online ad and said "That many pennies, mister."

Scowling, 10 minutes of phoning HQ, and it was more or less flung at me. I don't recall going to a shop since, other than looting the shelves in Hein Gericke's going-out-of-business-for-real sale.

Alright guys !

First of all i'd like to thank everybody who answered me seriously. It really helped my research even though it is only a short glance at the market. The reason i didn't do a monkeysurvey is because i think that they are highly impersonal, and i wanted open answers. Moreover some of your answers were funny Very Happy

Ste, the brand is skeed, they're selling all kinds of motorbike wear that are really soft to the skin and that will prevent your skin from burns if you fall down. Would you be interested in such a product ?
