Fork Seals

After having my bike off he road for a few weeks doing fiddly jobs i have been putting off for ages, I've decided to tackle a weeping fork seal

seals arrive today so plan to attack it over the weekend, I was given a headstock stand the other week so that should make things a bit easier.

Is there any gotchas etc?

only seals i have done before were on my ye olde CG - which are as basic as basic gets...

Do i need to order anything else apart from dust, oil seals an oil?

Bandit? If you have a Haynes manual the instructions are not too bad, Halfords had them last time I was in our local store.

Back the preload right off and then crack the top cap before taking the forks out of the yokes.

Crack the damper bolt at the bottom before taking the fork apart.

Damper bolt needs threadlock when it goes back together, need to get some if you don't have it.

Before you commit to hour after hour of frustratedly bashing and tugging at your stanchion, have you tried running a thin piece of plastic (e.g. a strip cut from a fizzy drink bottle) under the seal?

Sure, it might not work, but then again it might (I'm three for three so far) and it only takes a couple of minutes to try. Worse case is that it confirms that the seal actually needs replaced.

cheers guys, I hadn't tried the plastic under the seal trick but, there is free tool that has come with the seals to do that very thing....

Plus I'm pretty sure the seals were done recently (what was said when i bought it) as the oil oozing out is still clear/ very light green - so cant be that old surely?

If they are new seals and have gone again, you may need to adress WHY.

Could be pitting on the stanchion damaging the new ones. Could be worn bushes causing excess play.

So you might need new bushes.
