I've dabbled in mandolin, which makes a really nice counterpoint to an acoustic guitar. Easy to learn, tuned in open G, so just bar across the neck for major chords. Blues and bluegrass styles ftw! Smile

I played for 7 years. Won't need to spend a grand.

Trevor James 'The Horn' is a good bet for a starting sax.
Here

Renting could be a good option to get into it.
Would recommend getting a teacher for the first 6 months at least, otherwise you will get into terrible habits that you'll not be able to break for years.

EDIT: Was just thinking, your stubborn persona probably won't end well learning an instrument like this out of childhood. You can't say 'I find it easier/more efficient to do X than Y' because that's not how playing the Sax works.
You won't be able to use a muffler for a fair while, as it changes the way you hear your playing, and you won't learn as well.

Pete, what brand is your wife's sax? I've been thinking of getting back into it for a while.

Sonata. We bought it for my daughter when she was at school. She moved schools and gave up on the lessons.

It's this one or very close.

For £100 It's a goer the £50 off fisty can go towards me not playing it in the house when he's around Twisted Evil . I'll send you a Pm though to discuss and sort everything out.

I did want an acoustic guitar before but I've always really wanted to play the saxophone even more. I liked both when I was a kid however with money being tight couldn't have one and wasn't allowed to use any of the schools.

I'll look into the ukulele as well in the near future. One of the main reasons for the thread apart from the saxophone is to get back into musical instruments.

you can get a decent one for under £500 second hand
also you need to decide on Alto / Tenor / other model as they are different to play
it tales a lot of puff and some skill to get a decent note out of one
I gave up after about a week of trying to get even the basic's

my son did a bit in school enough to play a few tunes
but I love working with the floyd tribute band as the sax player is really good
so if your up for a challenge try it out

Which one, out of interest?

This is reminding me of an 'Ill Wind'

"I once had whim and I had to obey it to buy a french horn
from a second hand shop,
I polished it up and started to play it
In spite of the neighbours who begged me to stop."

It's regarding the crash in November believed to be damage in the cartilage on the wrist so can't lift anything over 6kg by order of the doctor. Hence no more saxophone or motorbike for a while.

Yes it was Pete, didn't think I needed to specify the actual members name.
