Wotcha. I'm looking to buy an A3 1.4 TFSI with the S-Tronic box (because, flappy paddles). The one's that are in my budget are around the 80-100k miles range.

Any issues with these that need to be looked at? I'm aware that the gearbox is due an expensive service every 40k, if this has been missed is it a deal-breaker?

Is it likely to become a money-pit or are they as reliable as the badge would suggest?

Don't do it.
Very very deep money pit potentially.
All Audi stuff is much expensivo, I had to replace a wheel on my S3 after a kerb incident at a roundabout. £500
Had to replace a headlight too. £500 then realised it made the other one look... old so kerching and £500 more
for a second one to make the cars 'face' look right.

Yes they are as unreliable ad the badge would suggest, as are the rest of the VAG stable. I wouldn't buy one, but I'm guessing you want a newish car with a premium badge as you'd look elsewhere for value otherwise.

I wouldn't listen to me though as I'm fairly anti new car, especially the more luxury and we'll equipped stuff with endless electronic shit fitted that you don't need.

I bought mine because it was quicker (marginally) than a Boxster S to 60 yet still had 5 seats. Twisted Evil
But I wouldn't call wheels and headlights fancy unnecessary stuff though, still an arm and a leg though.
Go drive a Suzuki Swift Sport instead, I'm having one of those next after a 24hr loan of one.Havent had that much
FUN driving a car since my Peugeot 205 1.6 GTi back in the day. Go test drive one immediately, simple high revving 1.6i
engine, no turbo or DMF to go wrong, superbly equipped as standard, xenons, bluetooth, climate, DAB, touchscreen
navigation etc (unlike Audi where everything is an extrs cost option beyond 4 wheels and a roof) and they handle
like few cars do these days and that's because they're LIGHT and set up to handle well straight out of the box.
10k buys a two year old one with 10k miles ish, 14k will buy a brand new one. (2012 onward has the 6 speed
box but can buy a 5spd one as old as 2007 for pretty cheepz.) As reliable as you'd expect from a small Jap
car and hey have the best stock xenon headlights I've ever seen on a motor, quite literally brilliant!
