Tell me about Egg Runs, specifically Squires

For the most part being a keyboard warrior on here is about as social as i get. One of my friends has suggested the Squires Egg Run as a Thing That Should Be Done. I've managed to glean that that one shows up with a donation and then lots of people ride out somewhere. Tell me more. What levels of organisation, chaos and stupidity might one expect from one of these events? Is this a gathering of sensible people that collect Polite vests? Loons that ride everywhere on one wheel and are likely to to collect other riders when they slip up? Is this likely to upset my insurers if I do it and something goes wrong?

Egg runs, Toy runs etc are all great for riding with a bunch of people who like to be seen to be doing charidee, overheating their bike and/or burning out clutches.

For me, anything like that should be avoided like the plague. I do not enjoy the overly organised nature, safety briefs, hi-viz proliferation and smug attitudes of the "l'm the most charitableist" participants.

However, you may love it, no way of knowing until you give it a go.

I much prefer meeting up with some mates at The Ace Cafe for breakfast, or Rykas and then going off for a much more informal ride. Sometimes we head off to Brighton or Hastings when those events are on. It's much more fun, the kind of ride where at the first roundabout out of Rykas everybody takes a different exit. Eventually you find each other, stop for fuel, get lost again, finally arrive at the event just as everybody is packing up and leaving, then go home. Typical BCF style outing.

The people that I ride with are mostly from this forum, I met them just by taking the plunge and turning up to a rideout posted in the regional forum one day. I've met some great people here and we have had some memorable trips with a lot of laughs. Brighton, Hastings, weekenders in France/Belgium, Lille for karting, 10 days down to Italy & Switzerland last year, Barcelona next month.

Try the egg run, but give something BCF organised a go too. What about Bubbs BBQ in the summer?

I have done a couple of charity runs out of curiosity (including RTTW), and I found that they were well marshalled by a mixture of volunteers and Police, sometimes with local press and TV coverage.

No stunt riders as such, but small groups of people in fancy-dress, clumps of Harleys and trikes, etc.

I met a few decent blokes that I had been 'chatting' to on other forums, and found it good to talk to people with similar bikes and interests.

Not everyone's cup of tea, and with curiosity satisfied, I don't bother so much these days.

Pretty much the same as the other posters. I did the Stoke egg run once, wouldn't do anything like it again unless I was forced to. I found the ride there and back with a couple of other bikes to be far more enjoyable.

I've not seen any accidents but you do need to be aware of those around you. Some appear to have never ridden with other bikes and will happily brake for no reason, cut across, or get way too close to you.

I actually enjoy the Glasgow egg run because of the technical challenge of not ended up embedded in some kangaroo hopping bunny suitist. Makes for a bit of variety.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the local Dibble will likely be all hands on policing it, so if you fancy a local ride out without a , that's the day and the time to do it.
