My next bit of DIY is a minor spruce up of the garden. The TV is up with Hidden cables, the laminate is down and the loft I will be doing this weekend. So I am ready for it Wink

The previous owner chimp did a comically bad job of painting the fence. I'll post pictures, the useless cunt managed to get it everywhere but the fence. It's as if you forced a 10 year old to do it and they did it bad as possible. Laughing

For the sake of £~150 and about 10 minutes work I'm going to splash out on new panels. I just want to get rid of the brown that ended up EVERYWHERE, it's on the fence posts, brickwork and it is on the block paving patio. What would be the easiest way of removing it?

I'd probably have a bash with a pressure washer first, if that doesn't work then maybe look at brick acid...

ETA: Would a coat of paint not tidy the panels back up? Or are they starting to go loose/rotten?

I alway paint brand new panels again with a decent weather protection treatment on both sides before I install.
The stuff they spray on when they are manufactured is pretty rubbish and does well to last a couple of years.

Oh an you will find you have to do the whole patio as you will have clean bits an filthy bits when you finish

I always use creocote (mixed with a bit of oil) for my fences, smells similar to the old stuff, but soaks in waaaay better than the wax based shite

^^^ Inclined to agree with Ariel.
For the new panels, creocote mixed with engine oil isn't very enviro friendly, but your fence panels will last for years.

Meh. If it's anything like the own brand B&Q stuff I spent a whole fucking day doing my fencing with, a light shower of rain ought to shift it.

The fence I've just had installed has pre-dipped panels and concrete posts, but the dip is very patchy looking, so I guess I'll have to go over them again Rolling Eyes Currently doing the new shed as well. It's a lot of work...I'm not used to work Laughing

I don't know if it would remove wood stain (but it does remove powder coat) but you can buy Dichloromethane (methane chloride) online. Around £12 for 5 litres from Darrant Chemicals IIRC. It's a solvent you can paint on and will probably lift it off whatever its on (Assuming what it's on isn't made of plastic, it'll just melt that).

You've got to be careful though, it's super nasty stuff. Use it in a well ventilated area, wear goggles, thick long gloves and a good quality mask (You can't easily filter the fumes, but it helps). It will burn you if you get it on you. And for the love of god don't try spraying it.

I have some if you want a bit to try first. I'm in Bedfordshire should you wish to collect a small jar or it or something. I wouldn't feel too comfortable posting it!

It's only designed to rinse off fences. It sticks like superglue to anything else.

No it doesn't. It's not very nice stuff but it's not apocalyptic as you suggest.

I wouldn't be just pouring it outside though, it's not the best of materials that should be released into the environment.

If you just spill a small bit on you then yeah, it'll evaporate off and you'll probably be fine. If you use it for like an hour without gloves and cover your hands in it then it will definitely at least irritate your skin.

It's a category 2 skin irritant, so not particularly pleasant stuff.

I'm no chemist, but I was lead to believe that it was a defatting agent. Perhaps that was Methylene chloride they were talking about. Laughing

They've just stuck a concrete one up nextdoor to my Old Mans place, it looks completely wrong. It's just not the right fence for where it is, more suited to a car park by a block of flats or something. The panels rattle about in the posts when it's windy too Rolling Eyes
Not trying to put you off or anything CS, as you were, get the shed finished Very Happy

Concrete posts wouldn't have been my preference, but the wind howls across the garden and the neighbour told me the previous occupant was always having to bodge the fence up - to which I can attest by all the bits of wood cack-handedly nailed on...until it got blown down Laughing So I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have to lay out on it again. Doesn't look too bad, definitely very solid. The panels seem pretty firm at the moment, I'll have to see how it goes with time/wood settling etc. But the panels can easily be replaced with this type of fence too - they just slot in place.

Was doing more shed painting up till about 20 mins ago, started bloody raining Evil or Very Mad

Pretty similar, but the panels in mine have frame-ends that fit very snugly. I watched them drop them in, and they needed tapping down. The other problem the old fence had was that the bottom of the panels just sat on the ground, so could just suck up the wet.

I am...

After continued columns and extractions without being mega strict with PPE - I didn't die, not once. It's definitely not good and you should wear gloves but we shouldn't think we'll die.

I'm glad though, that those who aren't chemists do treat solvents in that manner. Better than drinking it and saying "well I didn't know ..."
