I'm getting 17v when I rev the engine with the lights off, so I think it is safe to assume, that it's buggered. It will also explain why my battery has slowly been killed stopping it from starting the bike.
Does anyone have any recommendations of a new part that will not fail like this piece of crap that Kawasaki made?
There is a guy on the ER5 forum, who could possibly supply a new reg/rec (as in an improved design), modified to fit the ER5 for £113 delivered, which I would be willing to spend if it means it won't happen again.
Also, if I put my lights on, and run my heated grips, it's only pumping out 14.9v at the battery. Would it be OK to continue riding the bike like this until my name reg/rec arrives as the only other option is the bus, and I really, really don't want to have to do that?

Well it depends whether the guy can get the parts, and reading some of his posts from last month, he's having supply issues at the moment.
Genuine Kawasaki ones are about £120, which is absolutely stupid considering it will fail again.
If he can't supply me with one, I'll just go for a generic pattern part, which is also likely to fail in the future |

I'm just free-styling here, but don't all R/Rs on all bikes do the same thing? Reduce the voltage coming into them by transforming it down and dumping excess energy as heat? Or in the case of MOSFET ones, as magic?
i.e. what would stop you from using a generic part from any other bike that generates at least as much voltage and power?
I ask out of genuine interest, electronics isn't my forte. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

£115. That's got to be a bloody good reg/rec for that much.
Whichever you get..pop it in some airflow.
Some people even use heatsink paste for a good thermal connection...Suppose it would depend on whether the reg/reg has a dead flat surface on one side...Mine didn't. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

I just do not have the time to be arsing about finding a reg/rec that fits. I need the bike to get to work, otherwise I have to use the bus. I hate the fucking bus with a passion. I've done it before and I just end up working, eating, sleeping and sitting on a bus, with no time in between. It's dire.
I'm going to ring the local Kawasaki dealership in the morning in the hope they may have one in, otherwise, I'm either going to get one from ElectrexWorld for £80, or motorcycle-spares.com for £58. It really depends on who can deliver it to me quicker, and if motorcycle spares will honour the one year warranty, as it's a must.
I would order from Wemoto, but they have a strict policy on electrical returns so they get a from me. |

Ordered one today from Electrex World which will hopefully turn up in a couple of days.
May also be buying a ZXR400 reg/rec, as supposedly they fit and last longer. They're pretty cheap on eBay, so it can be my back up for when it goes again.
I think I'll also be investing in a little volt meter that I can wire across the battery so I can keep a constant eye on the status of it and catch it even earlier next time, before it ruins my new battery or anything else.
Oh, and it's looking like the only day I'll have to get a bus is Thursday, so I won't be pushed as close to suicide as I first thought |

Ordered the reg/rec yesterday dinner and it arrived this morning via special delivery. My new AGM battery that I ordered on Sunday also arrived.
£130 :

All fitted and working perfectly now. 14.3v with the lights off, 14.25v with the lights on, and 14.2v with the lights and heated grips on.
And I never did have to get the bus |

i found that if you can get a gpz regrec it can be make to work with the er5. had to cut off the plug, get a replacement male plug and swap 2 of the wires, cant remember which ones, think its live and ignition.
got a regulator for £10 the plug for £3 and its still running today after a 4000mile bike tour. more economical than buying a brand new one.
