So i was speaking to a motorbike enthusiastic friends of mine the other day and was told that i am legally allowed to modify my 50cc so long as i dont actually adjust or change the displacement? He spoke about something along the lines of exhaust mods and such being fine. If this is not the case does anyone have any idea what I can do to improve my speed slightly up hills? I live in a hilly town so anything to make it easier on my bike would be great.

If you have only AM entitlement (moped) then:

You can drive 2-wheel vehicles or 3-wheel vehicles with a maximum design speed of over 25km/h and not more than 45km/h. Light quadricycles with an unladen mass of not more than 350kg, not including the mass of the batteries in the case of electric vehicles, whose maximum speed is over 25km/h and not more than 45km/h

No mention of 50cc. But not allowed to go faster. If you do modify your moped, your insurers would expect to be informed. Up to you if you oblige.

Bishbosh 1999, that's 16 maybe 17 years old, right? Wait till you're 17 and get yourself a 125cc pocket rocket. It'll be cheaper and easier than modifying the 49cc scooter that you own at the moment. Also, more than double the displacement, safe to say, more than double the power and torque as well.

Many 50 cc machines can be de-restricted.

If it's got an exhaust restrictor and a variator limiting washer, then removing both will help and it'll probably run better and cleaner and cooler.

If de-restriction is more involved than this it's probably not worth the hassle or expense for now seeing as you'll be on a 125cc soon.

Tuning is often pointless, racy pipes are sometimes way too noisy, and changing one part often needs alot of other bits to be changed to get it to run right with 50cc automatic machines. The more tuned it is, with high revving pipes and cylinders the worse it is and the harder to set them up.

Also most cheap sports exhausts rot and fall apart after a winter or two. A std pipe will be quiet, and if well painted is pretty tough and long lasting too.

You could fine tune the gearbox so that it will sit at 28-30mph no matter what gradient you may face.

That is perfectly legal to do.
