This is a camera on the A3, heading North-East into London. It's on West Hill, just before the junction with Portinscale Road.

Google Maps link

What is it? Is it a red light camera? Or a speed camera? Or both? Thinking

I see people speed through it and jumping the lights all the time, but it never flashes.

Any ideas? This could shave several seconds off my commute Laughing

If there are dashes on the ground, it will do you for speeding.

The road markings are used to calculate speed.

I believe its both, I got caught by one towards the end of last year. They're going up everywhere now, so when you accelerate to get through the amber light (or if you're me just accelerate on green cos your an idiot) they get you, and obviously if you don't accelerate they get you jumping a red.

I think the safest thing to do is an emergency stop and get rear ended Thinking

This NEVER seems to flash. I've been doing a solid 30 and been passed by people on sportsbikes absolutely caning it through it, and I'm 99% sure I must have jumped the odd red light there before. Never a single flash.

Perhaps it's just a decoy. I'm not risking it though Laughing

I just wasn't sure whether it could do speed and red lights, or just one of the two. And it seemed oddly placed to me Thinking

Those ones don't necessarily flash in day light hours. Wink

That's a SpeedCurb camera.

It can do speed and/or red lights, but is supposed to have road markings for speed purposes, so those are probably just operating as red light cameras.

It's fully digital, uses road sensors rather than radar or laser, and can work without flashing in daylight. Folk blowing through the red just probably haven't been done for it yet.

There's 1 on Edinburgh Road in Glasgow, going back a good few months ago I was making progress at the same time a Golf gti was doing the same.... I'd totally forgot about the camera and went through around 40mph (Golf didn't bother to slow down though).... no flash and never heard anything about it.

A few weeks ago an ambulance went through it with its blue lights on (was getting dark by this time), and it done the double flash

Like others have said, they're speed and red light combined cameras. There's plenty of them in London and they're becoming more common.

However, supposedly only 2/3 of London's speed cameras are actually active at any one time so it comes down to how lucky you're feeling. A few months back I set off one of the dodgy cameras in the Limehouse link (three flashes, doing an indicated 32mph!) and never received anything. I've seen a lot of cyclists setting off the red light function on them as well.

YMMV of course.

Oops, sorry, I scrolled right past that 2nd image. Embarassed

That could be doing speed and red lights, without flashing.

Might be turned off, might only operate at certain times, the sensors might be on the blink, or it might be happily nabbing folk who saw someone else do it the day before without being flashed, then everyone gets a nasty surprise in the post two weeks later

I understood the check Mark's are corroboration for the film/images. The two pictures and clock will do you and the check Mark's corroborate the camera. Evidence of distance over time.
Weight of evidence.

I don't understand why folk speed though. Embarassed

But wouldn't it be a little more sensible and a whole lot cheaper to simply put up signs telling people not to read what you have read?

And why only you, in particular? Thinking
