I remember the first day of training of my DAS and the instructor was going over some basic stuff with us before he turned around and said, "one last thing, if you only listen to one bit of advice for your entire biking career let it be this; always wear a proper helmet." He then proceeded to reach inside his gob and remove half of his teeth and gum and managed to slobber out, "vats swhy".

Always worn a full face since lol turns out he was riding pillion in his early days of biking, came off at some speed and managed to rip open the lower half of his face leaving most of his bottom teeth in the tarmac.

Don't overestimate the ability of a plastic and polystyrene chin bar to protect you.

My helmet has a removable chin bar. It's TUV (and therefore euro) approved as both an open and full face helmet. The chin bar is just a relatively bendy bit of plastic. I wouldn't count on it to protect me from much more than wind and rain.

In the interests of starting a discussion, I would conter your post (since this is your second attempt to get a rise on the same subject) that the increased peripheral vision you gain from a well designed open face helmet increases your primary protection. ie, your ability to see and avoid an accident in the first place. You don't realise how restrictive of your vision full face lids are, especially the cheaper ones, until you've ridden with an open face or no helmet.

I would further suggest that you are far less likely to be travelling at high speeds, especially in the UK, while wearing an open face helmet. Because it gets bloody uncomfortable at anything much over 60mph.

I'd wear an open face all the time if it wasn't for the cold and wind blast. I'd certainly speed a whole lot less if I did so too.

EDIT: You can also eat a twix while riding.

Agreed. If I rode in London I'd wear an open face as much as possible for the increased vision

+1. And, let's admit it, a full face doesn't look right when riding a Harley wearing your kutte.

P or NP?

A long visored open face can offer surprisingly good weather protection while still giving decent vision. I am concerned about the chin grinding issue, which is why I enhancified mine.

This is of course a Federal Class Ultra European Offence Against Humanity and should not be emulated.

It's exactly what it looks like, an open face lid with an aluminium chin bar riveted on.

Commercial solutions include the £200 Schuberth J1...

... and the... hmmm... no, I think that's about it.

IIRC Years ago (when I first joined the forum) Hetz was getting ripped into by everybody for drilling a small hole in the side of his lid for a headphone cable.

Six holes for a riveted chin bar would have given people a heart attack Laughing

I like my full face lids. Becase stones kicked up by other vehicles, becasue headbutting bumblebees, becasue arriving somewhere with the entire small buzzing swamp insect population of the carrs and fens of south yorkshire/north Lincolnshire/nottinghamshire plastered over my helmet, leathers and headlight. Because surprise hailstorm. Because birdstrike. Becasue bird shitting itself whilst avoiding motorcycle.

I think if your going to suggest that argument it needs some statistics to back it up. Do people with open face helmets have less accidents?

I wouldn't wear an open face lid. I wear kevlar jeans with no knee armour(maybe I should wear it?). Risking a leg injury is one thing, but messing up my face is too much a risk I wouldn't want to take.

None of those are issues with a long visor.

monkeybiker wrote:

They probably have greater accidents but perhaps fewer. Interesting question, but:

1) You'd have to know not just the numbers involved in accidents, but the proportion of open to closed lids that are worn in the general riding population. It's not a simple question either: I switch between shortie open, long open, closed and flip front pretty much on a whim.

2) Consider selection bias. Open face + tracksuit / assless chaps does not speak to the same attitude as open face + armoured hi-vis. The former group may ride recklessly in a closed face, while I ride carefully, now, in an open.

I believe, possibly kidding myself, that there is an effect. You are more aware of being vulnerable in an open face, and it's an ongoing and tangible effect. Literally tangible, as you can feel the wind on your face.

This is in contrast to, for example <derail.jpg> hi-vis, which you're not aware of wearing.

Wear it. Having to deal with a knee issue after a car accident 10 years ago, which will no doubt get worse as I get older.......protect your knees laddie

I wear an open face because I am a hipster, that kills kittens.

I love the visibility, not having to take my glasses off every time I get off my bike, which in often when you work in your bike in London. I rarely get an opportunity to go above 60, but can confirm doing over 60 for long periods gets uncomfortable. I feel more connected with my surroundings and my moustache likes to flap in the wind.
