Wednesday, 6 January, 2016

Police are appealing for information after a number of distinctive and historic motorcycles were stolen from the personal collection of a bike shop owner in Batley.

The burglary happened at Padgett's Motorcycles in Bradford Road, Batley, between 6pm on Sunday, 20 December, and 3.30pm on Monday, 4 January, with the bikes stolen from a metal storage container attached to the shop.

The stolen bikes include:

A white Yamaha RD 250cc with 'Kenny Roberts Speeds Block' in red on the tank, made in 1976.
A orange and black Yamaha YR5, made in 1971.
A 1960s blue and white Vespa scooter.
A purple Ariel Square 4, made in 1954.
A Yamaha DT100 with white fuel tank, made between 1976 and 1978.
A BSA Gold Flash, made between 1950 and 1960.
PC Chris Eglen, of Kirklees Burglary Team, said: "These bikes have huge sentimental value to the victim who has collected them over many years.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who has seen any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Padgett's Motorcycles over the time period that this offence has occurred or anyone who has information relating to the current whereabouts of the stolen bikes.

"Anyone with information is asked to please call the Kirklees Burglary Team via 101 or to pass information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Lawd's sake. That's either a specialist theft by people who know exactly what they are doing, or the usual clueless pikey mongs who will end up just torching them because hurhurhur dey ain't wurth nuthing.

I know what my money's on. Sad

Shocked That,s a fair few bikes to lose in one go! Not a five minute job to nick them.
Must of had a fair sized van to move them also.

Hopefully someone will know something and tell the police.

No CCTV at all?!

IMO they knew exactly what they were there to steal, unfortunately.

I'd bet the victim would have proudly shown these bikes to people who seemed interested. And quite possibly had pictures posted on facebook of them too Sad

Well they had near two weeks.

Bad move keeping rare bikes in storage container with no level 1 response (which I'm sure the main premises would have)

Not really, I thought the same as you, in essence. He has these valuable bikes in a container with not as much as an alarm or CCTV...

When we have a distraught owner telling us of their bike being nicked, generally the first question is, what was it secured with? If the reply is, the steering lock, they get berated for being rather silly.

Steering lock is most likely better than an Oxford lock. Wink

"The stolen bikes include" so errrr, is that a complete list?

I hope the time window of nearly two weeks is a typo!

You,re right, but the time it took to move so many bikes, I would thought someone would have seen or heard something?

It doesn't take long to load bikes properly into a van and secure them.

Their CCTV cameras...

Padgett's is a rather large dealership across several sites in Batley, there's a honda and suzuki franchise and they own the large homeware store, garden centre and tea room nearby. There is so much expensive stuff about, i can't imagine they dont have cctv.

Possibilities:
CCTV broke becasue rain/flooding/power outage
Inside job
Unhappy customer
Too busy counting the money to bother with adequate security
Bikes were lost years ago and they only just noticed

Hmmm? Big business not noticing what's missing, sounds plausible.

From the information we have it's fair to say they're not vehicles held in stock; they're in a storage container which probably means they're not in use and aren't accessed every day. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that no-one had checked the container for a while.

Last time I was there (about 2 1/2 years now), they had some beautiful bikes around the Suzuki site on display. I think that they put the bikes into storage over the xmas period to keep them out of sight maybe.

I suspect they'll find the rest of the collectors items abandoned. The only buyers who'd be interested would be collectors and the majority are likely to be fairly careful who they buy from.

I get the impression the thieves are the usual brain-dead 'steal now, think later' type who didn't have a clue about what they'd taken.
