Hello,

my friend recently got a honda xr 125 2005 model and the bike wont start, the starter motor does nothing. we have tried running power straight to the starter motor and the starter motor spins over fine and turns the engine over but it just refuses to when you use the starter button.

another of my friends has the same bike and kindly let us butcher bits off it to eliminate causes and this is what we have done so far.

we bypassed the killswitch and stand switch and made sure the neutral switch was wired up but still nothing

we swapped the battery over and fully charged the old 1

we swapped starter solonoids

we swapped the cdi box over

it did exactly the same thing

we dont know what else to try, all the ignition comes on when you turn the key and the lights, when you press the starter button the front light dims quite a lot but my friend says it does exactly the same thing on his bike so i think thats normal. the starter motor doesnt even click when you press the button which we read on google is usually the way to tell its a starter motor problem

Anyone got any idea's?

Thanks in advance

Which part of the starter motor was this "earth cable" attached to?

Have you checked for power at the start button?

Its on with 1 of the bolts that holds the starter motor onto the engine. My mates bike was wired the same way and his works fine. I assume the start button has some sort of connection because when u press it the front light dims.

Iv just stripped the bike again and cleaned up the earth on the coil and its made no difference

I guess the next job will be looking at all the safety switches.

I assume all the fuses are ok?

Do you have a multimeter for trouble shooting, or just going to try change every possible part?

Yeah the fuses r fine. We cut the kill switch wires and bypassed it along with the stand kill switch and we rewired the neutral switch back up. If we put a live straight to the starter with ignition on we get spark so I don't think its a safety switch issue. It seems like a wiring loom problem but I'm no expert so its just a guess

We just took it out and it starts on a bump so kill switches aren't an issue

This might be the right wiring diagram…

The starter button does two separate things: it cuts the headlights, and it sends live to the starter motor. If one half of the switch is fucked (or has a bad connector) it will just do one of those things. If that wiring diagram is right, get a multimeter (or a battery-and-bulb) and check continuity between black/brown and yellow/red when the switch is pushed. If you don't get continuity, try cleaning up the contacts and spraying the switch with contact cleaner.

You can also try checking for a voltage across the starter motor terminals when the switch is pushed. If you don't get 12Vish then power isn't getting to the motor, and there's no reason to think there's anything wrong with it.
