Hello chaps
Does the 2012 manual version of this bike come with ABS as standard? If not are the brakes good?

I'm going for my first big bike and want to feel safe, any advice would be great (on what bike to get) must be economical and upright riding position though!

Cheers Thumbs Up

Brakes are adequate, and yes it comes with abs as standard.

By adequate, it didn't feel completely wank compared to my divvy 900 with blue spots. Forks are softer than a not very hard thing though.

Brakes are probably fine, however it's not a great bike.

NC700X does not, NC700XA does. They both have linked brakes.

I've learned pretty soon enough that the feel of safety is in the proper bike gear you've got. Motorcycle wise, I've also learned that sports motorcycles are the best when it comes to safety, as they are over engineered and the performance of the brakes and suspension is way beyond what you're gonna ever need on the open road. The frame geometry of a sports motorcycle always helps with the road feel. Taller motorcycles on soft suspension will make you feel remote from what's going on under you.

I'd say try more motorcycles before you decide what to buy. ABS is not the only part of the equation.

Well, why not, a car would be a safer way of transport, but I don't think OP joined this motorcycle forum to hear that. Thumbs Up

I had a courtesy NC750 for a few weeks while my bike was being fixed. I found it gutless, boring and an all round dull bike t ride.

On the plus side it was quite comfortable and very economical but most bikes tend to get exciting at around 7K revs. The NC redlines at 6.5 so it just had that feeling where it was going to get excit.... oh I need to change gear.

I had one for a day too and fully agree with the above... and most of my riding is fairly mundane urban commuting on my little CBR500R which feels superior in every way.

First off ABS does not make the brakes good or bad, it simply means there's something that may prevent you from locking the wheels up if you're clumsy with brake control.

Feeling safe isn't so much about the bike but rather confidence in the bike. Very short term knowing you have ABS & traction control may give you more confidence but it's no substitute for road miles.

Well it doesn't do too well against the CBR500R in terms of acceleration, let alone that well known monster powerhouse Laughing F800 R.

Had one as a courtesy bike, pretty much the dullest bike I have ever ridden, hated the fecking thing.

My sons CB500 was much more fun to ride.

I'm not getting drawn in to the 200bhp'ers argument or the buzz word bikes of the 2006's> this time, so though it's of no help to the OP I'd never buy one cos ABS.

They never put ABS on the NSR500, so I don't need it on my bikes.

The commuter biker might want it, but if no cars or bikes had ABS, air bags or TCS, we'd all be safer by now.

Yes all the variants sold in the UK came with ABS

Massively stupid, sweeping statement...by what criteria?

As a commuter which is reliable, cheap to buy and run and fast enough to scare me if needed, it IS a great bike.

Bikes are as exciting as you ride them...

It's a fucking dull bike because it's a commuter, and therefore uninteresting. basically a two wheeled car. If you find it at all scary I do wonder what your point of reference is, I really do.

"Retard rev limit" (Honda-san's words) at 6250, hard limit at 6500? Even I'd find that frustrating.

Massively correct statement.

Criteria...

Budget brakes, budget suspension, low revving slow lifeless engine.

If its fast enough to scare you, I'd reconsider your life choices. It is slow and weak.

A great bike is one that has been designed by people who like bikes for people who like bikes, not faggots that enjoy mass mpg whilst slowly killing their brain cells whilst commuting on their gash as fuck bike.

Bikes are exciting, I agree, however I can't ride a 6k limiter bike. That isn't a bike. It's a shit box with 2 wheels. I'd rather have a hot dog smothered in diarrhoea and mustard than that bike.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I have just gone out and purchased a Honda CB500F 2013 model but brand new (as in not been ridden).

I got an amazing deal which included double the worth price of my old bike in part exchange and the full luggage set included (£820) all for £3400.

So i'm happy but no doubt i'll get some stick over my new choice?????? Thumbs Up

Depends. Could be epic win or just fair enough.

Registered in 2013 but 0 miles, or a 2016 registration on a 2013 model year bike?

Are you aware that 2013 model year bikes "need" a valve check and adjustment at the 600 mile service?

I own both. The Enfield is more fun to ride.

The question wasn't "which was more fun" though, was it.

The most interesting question now is that you still haven't explained why you still own a bike you hate and hardly ride. So why?
