Hi guys,

I recently bought a 2001 Honda CBR600 F-Sport. I had a quick question regarding the idling of my bike when I start it from cold. There is no choke on this bike and it idles at 4k when started cold, gradually lowering (becomes normal after about 5 mins).

I was wondering if this is normal? It's pretty loud and in the mornings can be annoying (unless I ride off straight away which I do not really want to as I've read it's not good for the engine).

Start engine. Get on. Ride.

Really no need to warm it up for ages. And yes it is normal for your bike, they ave an automatic fast idle/choke to warm it up when it's cold.

Wax idle unit. Yes it's normal. I'd just start and go gentle for a few miles.

It's fuel injected most FI vehicles do this until they get up to temp. You can see cars that aren't properly warmed run fast and seem to have a lot of exhaust emissions.

The only thing with a wax idle circuit is it holds it at a specified rpm for a specified amount of time, which means if you pull away and ride straight off with no stops you're fine. But if you pull away and have to pull up to a junction, what tends to happen is you clutch out and get a shock because the bike is still 'idling' high and lurches on you.

I've had the Viff do it to me and a chap I know lunched his Blade into a parked car because of it.

Hi Usy.

I can't help you with your situation and I have a similar one.
I have a 125 gamma and it ides nice at 2.5k but if I turn the screw it drops to 1.5k and cuts out.
It won't idle between 1.5 and 2.5k.
I also have this problem.. when my lights are on the tick over drops..1.5k
So if I run her at 2.5k and turn the lights on, the tickover drops to 1.5k and cuts out!
So I'm constantly fiddling with the screw.

I had a CBR600F and was alarmed at first at how fast the engine idles as standard when warming up.

Just a CBR600F thing, my friend's did the same, nothing to worry about.

Found this on the CBF600 that the training school used when I was doing DAS. The lurching in the first few minutes of each session always made me feel like I'd lost my ability to control the clutch properly and threw my confidence first thing each day. It was fine after a few minutes though.

I wouldn't worry about it, mines FI and does the same, particularly when its cold.

As people have said just start it up and set off taking it easy until its warmed up a bit. I usually start up and go within 10 seconds.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Very helpful. I guess I'll just set off straight away too. Smile
