Shocked

Then I read the article and...

Quote:
the patent wording states that "the liquid fuel may consist of diesel oil or any other fuel that is provided with a lubricating property." All of which points toward an industrial generator-type machine rather than a high-performance motorcycle engine.

...oh. Ok. Crying or Very sad

It is interesting that they're still working on them though, regardless of the application.

Looks like drawings for a testbed machine. What's that design of crank their using called?

I saw an article way back about Lotus experimenting with an opposed cylinder twin 2T that used FI and adjustable capacity cylinders.

Confused.com. Whats happening with that crank arrangement? That surely can only work if the flywheel acts as a rocker rather than in a circular motion. Fine for a pump I suppose but not much use in a vehicle. I still say supercharging would be the way to go, pressure injection direct into the cylinder, an overhead exhaust valve, sealed crankcase with conventional lubing.

Yamaha have been making fuel injected, 250bhp+, 2-stroke outboards for years.

Would totally fit in a motorcycle chassis. Cooling might be an issue.

Correction, the Lotus engine is a single. Seen a twin somewhere though.

Interestingly, Lotus mentions being able to run on different fuels just like Honda. Could be useful in some parts of the world with crappy fuel supplies.

Anything new and two stroke yet meeting current pollution regs is interesting regardless of the application.

Personally I think bike manufacturers have gone too far down the road of clean four-strokes to back out now or make them consider two strokes or whatever other tech they could use.

The only thing that could change this is a massive drive for efficiency or much lower fuel consumption targets. Then the cross roads might be downsized F.I. Motors or other technologies like two stroke etc.

Anyway the industrial Honda two stroke design is nothing like as exciting as the new Rotax 850cc twin just introduced for snowmobiles by BRP.

This motor while still needing to sip a tiny amount of 2stroke oil, a fraction of what current direct injection strokers use, is very interesting and different to the norm. Its 850cc 165bhp, very light, and Revs to 8000rpm, yet it's using four stroke pressure fed main bearings and big ends, a one piece crank per cylinder and diesel engine bottom end design.

I for one am impressed if not totally sure how it all works. It would fit in a bike too!

...Not if you go fast enough.

It's the oil arrangement that always confused me. Why add the oil directly to the fuel? Wouldn't it be simpler for daily use to just have a small auxiliary tank for oil that feeds into the fuel lines?

Suzuki GT250A fed the 2 stroke oil into the main bearings.

The direct injection 951 cc Rotax engines in Seadoo's are the same, worth a bit of a reading for anyone interested in 2 strokes as they are (to my limited knowledge) one of the more advanced strokers ever to make mass production. Unfortunately it was more for emissions (california is one of the largest PWC markets in the US) than performance but put a pair of good carbs, a pipe and some porting in there and 200 hp realistic Thumbs Up

Many two stroke motorcycle and outboard engines on boats have exactly that!
