So we have been using a child minder for about 3 months now, she seems great our little one loves her an stuff

Today my Mrs seen the child minder at a playgroup without the kids she normally minds, when my Mrs asked how they were etc the child minder said she had left them with another child minder while she went out and picked something up from another child minder (at the playgroup).....

This has kinda got us worried now, we pay the child minder to look after our daughter, we know she is CRB'd etc, is this the first time she has left the kids with someone else?!

Think we are overacting?

oh an i know this isn't mumsnet.....

I would not be happy about that at all, and things like these are why I didn't want our daughter going to a childminder.

What happens if they do need to nip out? What happens when they go to the loo and 5 kids are alone for 5 minutes while she does her business?

No thanks.

CRB just means she's never been caught.

We had this issue once with an ex-childminder of ours. We moved on very quickly. Our child shouldn't be left with anyone we've not met before. Fuck CRB, how do you know they're not <insert your moral/legal objection here> around your child?

She might have thought it was ok, but it's definitely not. Have a word with her. Based on her reaction and the availability of other childminders in the area, consider someone else. Similar thing happened to my bosses' boy, friend said they'd look after them but phoned a 3rd party to pick them up from school without telling mother. I'd be angry, and I'd be explaining politely to the childminder why it's out of order and shouldn't happen again.

Out of interest, what should a childminder do with your kids when they need to go to the toilet?

You don't want them to leave your kids unattended, you certainly don't want them to left with someone else and I'm willing to bet that you'd be unimpressed if they took your kids with them when they go to drop their own kids off at the pool.

So what should happen?

I was pretty much raised by my childminder as my parents worked silly hours when I was a kid. If she needed to pop out she'd take us with here. From what I can recall she never left us on our own while she was out, I assume she'd just hold it in until she got home.

She did however ask her friend to pick us up from school on a few occasions. This was the early 90's so maybe things were a little different / safer? Mind you, James Bulger was killed around the same time.

I'd have a polite word with her next time you see her and raise your concerns.

Makes you wonder how many times that has happened in the past without you knowing. We had a friend, and this was several years back, who used to childmind and would leave the kids locked in her car while she went into Tesco to get shopping.

It really put me off and we never used childminders with ours until he was older, maybe 7 years old. A few hours after school until one of us got home. Before that we used a nursery down the road. More expensive but I felt happier with the setup and having more carers on hand.

I have no answer to your issue. The question is, do you fell 100% happy leaving your child there now?

The wifey across the road used to childmind. Parents would drop their kids off at 8:30, turn up at 5:30 and literally have to drag them to their cars as they screamed and struggled to get back to their "real" family.

Just my cheery thought for the day.

depends how old the kids are. sometimes you have to leave them in a playpen and let them shout while you poop. If older, you leave them playing on the landing with the toilet door open so you can hear if they're choking/drawing on the walls etc, and of course only if there are adequate stairgates. By the time they are 4 you can pretty much explain what you're doing and leave them watching Tom and Jerry.

Having them in the room while you poop is not too abnormal if you're desperate, better that than leaving them unattended.

It might be that she asked the parents of the kids if this was ok, or that it was a regular deal that everyone was aware of.

I'm from the older generation from before the days of CRB and all that jazz. You left your kids at nursery/playschool that was vetted by the council and if your kids were happy, you were.

Now you can look at it two ways IMO. Yes, you are not happy she has left the kids with someone you personally haven't vetted or she and other registered child minders have an arrangement that if any have to go and do something, another child minder steps in to cover while the first is away. That way a child is never left on his own or with someone who isn't registered and checked.

I think my main gripe would be that I wasn't aware of this arrangement but that would be about it. To my way of thinking it seems very responsible what they are doing, responsible, not reprehensible Wink

Have a chat and iron things out to your satisfaction. If your kid is happy you don't want to spoil things for her for no reason.

Lol, it's kind of the same logic as people who come back from a GUM clinic with an all clear, and think that actually proves they don't have anything

No, it just means they didn't find anything. That time. You herpes riddled monster.

Is it of any wonder that kids are so useless and demanding these days?

Yes I'm old. Back in the day Moms generally looked after kids until they went to playschool or similar if not then it passed onto friends and family. When I use to get home from school either my 2 year older sister sorted us out or we went to a neighbours or we just ran around with other kids until the parents called us for tea. Life certainly felt simpler in the 70's.

Well I don't want my child growing up to be the internet's biggest whingebag, which is clearly what happens if you get passed between friends/family/neighbours etc.

Got any kids?

And I'm happy that I didn't end up as a paranoid drama queen hiding in the corner from the real world. The passing around would now be referred to as 'a support network within a community enabling the development of social interaction skills'.

Plenty of kids, plenty of grandkids. They all lead very normal lives. Out of interest, do you have a rota to ensure 24hr cover or do you just hope that nothing happens while you sleep?

Paranoid drama queen Laughing

Not paranoid, not drama queen - more considered about the pros and cons of the differing kinds of childcare available to us

My daughter is in my house while she sleeps, next door to my bedroom and we have a monitor on - not in someone else's house with someone else's kids who she nor I really know.

Background - I got bullied and picked on by a child when I was 3-4, but was told by my carers that "I had to just get on with it" as it turned out, after discussing it with my parents decades later, that he was being mistreated/abused by his parents. So he took it out on me.

I wouldn't want that for my daughter, as I remember how it felt. Hence Nursery, where there are multiple staff in the room and on the premises, CCTV covering the rooms etc.

Thumbs Up

You're right, it was simpler in the 70's. Its a much more open world now.

It's important that you do what works for you. It's a pity that parents have so much pressure put on them, there is enough worry when bringing up children without the media adding to it.
