After my rear-ending last month I thought I'd try something a bit different so got myself a BMW R1100RS. I quite like it and have been gradually unbodgeing it before my own bodging can start. (e.g. PO had snipped wires to ABS warning bulbs. Reconnecting plus resetting ABS unit seems to have done the job to fix)

It's rather quiet though (loud pipes save, dude..) and I gather that an exhaust plus the GS intake tubes can release a few horses.

I've seen these on eBay - anyone tried one? Is it a good idea or a waste of time?

I find myself running out of revs and it feels like it could get a bit gruntier in the mid range with a bit of messing about.

I don't think you will see a noticeable power gain. Those things redline at about 7.5k and you won't squeeze much more out of it, even with a can, it's all about the torque.
