PostPosted: 14:43 - 15 Mar 2016    Post subject: Powder Coating Service While you Wait? Reply with quote

Hi,

I've been reading a few threads on here, but wanted to ask if anyone knows of a powder coating service you can ride to, have them remove the wheels etc. and reinstall after powder coating?

I'm looking to have the wheels and rear set brackets powder coated black on my Monster 1100 as the silver sucks - Sick

Would prefer not to dismantle the bike and wait a week for the service!

Thanks
Antony

The First problem with your plan is that a powdercoater is not a bike mechanic, they will want only the component with no bearings sprocket carrier etc.

the next problem is that its a multistage process and while it can be done one stage after another it's rarely done that way. it'll take at least a few days unless he's not busy or he's understanding and doing you a favour

Thanks. Waiting in this and age of consumerism just doesn't feel natural.

Back on point though, maybe I'll leave them for now and get some black CNC/Ducabike rearsets and see if I still want the wheels done.

Do you have any idea of how powder coating even works?

Yes but your bike is a shit heap.

Anyway, ride through powder coating, not going to happen.

Sarcasm isn't lost on you. Figured it could be done in a day if it was prioritized though looks like I'm dreaming.

As mentioned though, I'll probably just get the rear sets and see how it looks after that. Powder coating would have been cheaper, but not worth the hassle it seems unless I was living close to a place that does it.

Unfortunately the coffee stops won't work until I have clip ons, a hipster beard and brown shoes.

Or OP, buy another set of wheels on fleabay, powder coat them, then swap the coated wheels for the ones you've got on your bike. Sell the OEM wheels for more than the wheels for coating costed, be happy.

The key is, buy the wheels for coating cheap, scratched paint etc. does not matter as you're going to sand blast it, to prep the wheels for coating anyway. Wink

EDIT: Oh, now I see it, 2010 Monster 1100. Yep, buying another set of wheels won't really work. I thought we were talking about a mid 2000's model with pretty generic wheels used on many, many motorcycles.
Well, the idea stands, if you can obtain another set of wheels, do it.

Great Idea but have a look for Monster 1000 wheels, there aren't any in the UK, aren't any scratched ones, and the others are $$$.

Unless you get another pair of wheels that will fit.

Yeah, there are very few used rums about and the ones available are priced almost the same as new. Not a bad idea in theory though.

The other option is to buy some black wheels and flog mine, although then I would be waiting a while to sell them probably. Not ideal when the plan is to ride the bike back to Norway next month.

They do exist (ride in/ride out wheel powdercoating that is) - I used a place years ago in Bristol; was quite expensive though in heinsight I would of been better off removing the wheels myself and taking them somewhere even if it meant a bit more waiting (which many places wouldn't anyway) considering the cost.

Seeing as you live in Norway according to your profile though, that might not be much use to you Razz.

This was the place I used www.realitymotorworks.co.uk

Cheers for that, I'll take a gander. I've started checking for powder coating places and bike mechanics around Kent to see if any work in tandom. I have some stuff I want to do to the bike and since I wont have tools, it might make sense to have a bike mechanic take off and send in the wheels/rear set brackets for powder coating if it'll only take a couple of days.

Griff's is good. Highly recommended for a good finish and they take care with what they're doing. There are cheaper places around but I've seen too many examples of stuff returning with paint in threads etc, no masking and dodgy finishes.

I'd agree to be honest. They were quite expensive compared to having the tools and knowledge to remove stuff yourself and take it to a generic powder-coating company, but for simplicities sake of riding in/riding out as I wanted to do at the time it was reasonable value for money overall.

The parts I had done have survived a good 5+ years of regular neglect/ignoring powdercoat-care instructions now Laughing (the front wheel in particular has recently gone to sh*t a bit... but I rarely ever clean them, so its not suprising).

Just to clarify too - i've only had a few items powdercoated by Griff's, I have no opinion or review of their other services.

Nick got back to me from Reality Motorworks saying that they no longer offer the 'overnight' service as they're too busy and no longer do the stripping down. Instead they recommend dropping it off to a workshop in Thornbury (V10 Specialist Motorcycles) who can arrange it - though it'll take a week. Seemed decent if anyone is looking for a place.

I'm just waiting to hear back from a few places in Kent. I've given up on the quick idea, though hoping to find a place who can limit it to a couple of days.
